My guess would be that the crank position sensor came with electronic ignition, since breaker points were mechanically actuated.
My '94 Evo had electronic ignition, but no crank position sensor. It used a cup with two notches on the end of the cam to trigger the ignition when a notch passed the sensor. So, the carbed Evos had a cam sensor but no crank sensor. I'm sure the crank sensor arrived with EFI.
I think the very first Fuel injected EVO's had a crank position sensor. 1995 should be the first year and it was not too many models that had the fuel injection option.
