Ok, I’m used to inductive rpm and timing lights. This on is a bit different, there are settings depending on spark per revolution. It sounds like this one is set incorrectly. Take a look at the pdf @RIPSAW sent a link to. Idle should be around 9-1100. Get that right and it should be correct.

Dseago Thanks for the info, the model RIPSAW posted is the 2a and gives the ability to reset. The one I found is not resettable nor does it have the select button
I remember using this Tiny Tach on my 03 Sportster just to check rpm. I believe I took the reading on the meter and doubled it for the rpm. Been a long time in the tool box
@brakeless if they are a good quality they are very accurate. I used to use them tuning hot rods back in the day because they were more accurate than the analogs I ran. They have been used for timing for decades.
Well I'm only going by what I read on a LawnTractor Forum. I was trying to set the idle on a B&S VTwin I rebuilt and found some on Amazon and at Harbor Freight. But they were cheap.

don't know about lawn mowers, Brake
But I've used them on power equipment for years (Tiny-Tac brand specifically)
The only failures I can recall in 20+ years of using them is the hour meter stops working.
but the tac still reads
when you run the equipment daily, you can tell the RPM within a coupe hundred revs without tac
Tiny-Tac has always confirmed what I hear and has stayed consistent "forever"
As our Harleys have a wasted spark your "tach" is reading a spark that does nothing.
So it's reading twice as much as it should be.
Thanks Ranger.
Its been many years since I used Tiny Tach. I forgot that it reads half of the actual rpm. Set it at 500 and thats where it likes to be, 1000 rpm
