Loud pipes save lives?
My 1st thought seeing the picture was..Put the dang kickstand up bonehead!!
Too quiet reminds me of the time a guy on a Goldwing passed me on the right, in a school zone, in my own lane. That lane-sharing stuff isn't legal here. That thing was so quiet, it scared the crap outta me.
I shoulda stabbed him.
I ran drag pipes on all my iron-barreled big twins. Maybe that's why I have serious hearing loss. State Troopers used to stick a billy club up your pipes when they stopped you - no baffles meant a ticket. That continued until general harassment cooled off in the '80's.
Anything later than a shovel, the tone and sound with drags or super loud pipes just irritates my ears for some reason.
On my touring bikes, I like my "cadillac" to be quiet. A long 10+ hour day on the super slab with loud mufflers just gives me "sound fatigue".

I had a Shovelhead back-in-the day with "drag pipes" that I loved but cops hated it!
I have an carb'ed EVO with straight Samson fishtails and it's about as loud as I can tolerate.
My CVO Ultra (110) with Rinehart XT True Duals with 4" mufflers is a tad too loud for long trips but the V&H Twin Slash Rounds on my Tri-Glide has "rumble and throatiness" that is compatible with a 1/2 shell or a FFL modular helmet.
As they say with beauty (being in the beholder's eye) everyone has a preference when it comes to the sound of their H-D and much of that comes from where and how they ride as well as who they may be riding with.
The mufflers that came on my 00 Heritage were a JOKE. It sounded like a Honda 50
The 2nd gen Screamin' Eagle mufflers they put on weren't much better. Had them on there for a month.
One time, my dad had a CHP pull him over (on the 74) It had the old Sportster style welded looking mufflers
on it. No baffles. It was F'n loud. He stuck a tape measure up the pipe. Went all the way til it hit the exh valve (Tink Tink)
Needless to say, he got a fix it ticket that day. Got a cop buddy to sign it off.
Early one morning I was heading down a 2 way highway at 65 mph. It was overcast and still fairly dark At the last minute I saw a deer standing on the shoulder on my side of the highway. It could have gone two ways, but fortunately it bolted away from the highway.
I can't say for sure, but I suspect my Street Cannons might have got its attention and made it run away from the sound.
