Wow, BuzzCap and Gov5, thank you both so much for the encouragement! I would like to keep at it and conquer this little maneuver, for my own satisfaction mainly. But also because I feel the skills will make me a better rider. I'm hoping the DOT place will be closed on Memorial Day and maybe I can go out and setup cones, and really dig into it.

You know, I do remember thinking the SG is not as hard to turn as the Dyna. I've only had it 14 mos and I was super tentative with leaning it for fear of dropping it, but I have to say I got over that pretty quick once I started practicing.

I will definitely be watching this thread, and hopefully I can post a success video sometime down the line.

came across this on YouTube yesterday. pretty crazy. she has another vid where she posts the guy who won and it took him well over 2 minutes

edit: in the vid if you watch her right foot closely you will see her working the rear brake almost constantly. I believe this is what @BuzzCap7 was referring to in a post above.

One challenge is finding a place to practice. The nearby school lot is gated. I've been going to a DOT lot, which is about 10mi away, but only after they close at 5pm.

I've been alternating practice on my Dyna Low Rider and Street Glide. The best I can do right now are 19' turns. There's about another 1/2" to push before the bars lock, either fear or a mental block is preventing me from getting there. I feel like I need to lean a little more to push the bars all the way, but I haven't found the stones to commit. I also tend to slow too much when I'm in the turn, instead of going through it steady like pyuchem posted.
I feel your pain. I had a great spot for Sunday mornings that I lost bc I moved. Found a new spot, literally 1 minute away and now lost it as well as they've started closing the gate during off hours. not sure if they got word from someone I was practicing there or if unrelated.

just takes practice as far as being smooth like pyuchem. I'm not by any means as smooth as he is but I am in the same range as far as turn radius. I went out today and did a bit of practice and noticed my continuous circles are much smoother than before.

The best tip I can give on this is to keep the motor at a steady and fairly high rev rate. This way, you don't need to pay any attention to the throttle at all. You will already be feathering the clutch and the rear brake to give you the control you need, and taking the throttle out of the equation just gives you one less thing to worry about. Keeping the throttle somewhat high gives your flywheel the inertia to drive you through tight low speed turns.

Other than that, just make sure to look where you want to go - even more than you think you should be looking. After a bit of practice, lock to lock low speed manoeuvring becomes much, much easier.

THAT is GREAT!!!!!!!! I am NO WAY that good. THANKS for the tag 2K10FBLO.

Nvr saw the need to master the slow ride. LOVE watching it!!! 'juss do enough for the streets and slow moving.

I was VERY interested out of curiosity about her technique. RPM usage as adm was talking about, where she was looking, rear brake usage and such.........REALLY NICE!!!

TY again for the tag......

kinda interesting to me that it appears she's looking down while doing this. Which is counter to every thing I've ever read, been shown, taught, told whatever. Or maybe it just seems she's looking down

Yes BUT BUT BUT............many LEOs I spoke with said for the flow ride that is also what they do. A few said they look up and off in a distance. Not quite the horizon.

If u watch LEOS in U-Tube, they likely are looking down more than not.

And (this is an important and) and, there is a saying, "Look down, go down." This being a slow ride, u really are not going anywhere. No real turning. So I would say this would be the exception to the rule.

It would be interesting my friend for you to try it both ways. See which works for you.

When I am in traffic, I typically look up at the car in front of me. AND LOL I found myself looking OFF TO THE SIDE and not falling over. LOL!!!! BUT no way for any real length of time. I can loo left or right momentarily. I ride a lot on the beach so there are thongs that are.........well, I try not to look too long.

This really helps. When I practice slow race, I'm trying to keep throttle locked (but very difficult to do for me) and modulate the clutch while constantly applying pressure on rear brake.

On my next practice run I'll try to modulate rear brake and see how this goes.

I also notice how close and up they sit to the tank. Most of my practice has been on factory seat, I'll swap to reach seat and see if that helps too. I remember when I had reach seat on, I felt more comfortable at slow speed.

Funny thing, when you are set up right, u can actually REV the throttle and all is well. NOT that u should. I used to do that a lot in the figure 8 and snowman. It was FUN!!

The Ft. Lauderdale Drill Team head guy asked me why I do that. I told him, it was fun. I had HOOKER pipes so, THAT kind of says it all. LOL!

I do not do it in the slow ride tho. But u can.

Anyway, my question is, why pychem, do u have trouble keeping the clutch in 1 position?? In the friction zone. Why is it difficult for you??

When I first start my bike for the day, I notice my friction is right in the middle, it's very predictable. AS the time goes by and bike gets hot or when it's hot day (80+) my friction zone moves out and becomes very unpredictable. It's like non existent. It's been like that from day one.

I remember in one of the videos Jerry Palladino talk about this and his solution was to let the bike cool down. That's not a long term solution, right ? But then I see cops do this day in and day out. Do they have the same issue ? If yes, then my only solution is practice, practice and some more practice. That is my motivation....

I have Mueller slave and it has helped some with clutch pull, but not much with friction zone.
