Default TPMS question

I have a stock 22 RK FLHR with TPMS. The stock wheels are 18” front and rear. I plan on changing to 19” Turbine front/18” rear.
Doc Harley said on one of his videos that the size of wheel matters for TPMS so in my case I will need a new sensor for the 19 Turbine front wheel. My question is can I reuse my stock rear sensor on the 18” rear Turbine? Also will I need to calibrate using any special tool?
thanks

They don’t have different sensors for different size wheels… the sensors are all the same. Just be sure your new wheel has 8.3mm valve stem holes. But on the TPMS screen in the diagnostic software you can verify your bike’s tire size, have your shop update the info in the BCM and you should be good. Don’t buy any new sensors.

are you sure he didn't say that tire size matters for rdrs? tpms is part of that. the tpms portion isn't going to care what size tires you have, but if you are outside of stock parameters on wheel/tires, the abs is possibly going to have a fit. as long as the valve core sizing is correct, you'll be fine. even then, there are workarounds.

I recall in the past hearing the 'Doc' mention that the sensors were wheel specific... I dug up the video. Go to the 6:00 min mark in the YouTube vid below.

But, if you check the installation instructions for the factory TPMS sensors, it shows they fit 2020 and newer touring bike wheels. They are front and rear wheel specific. But there's no mention of wheel size at all. https://serviceinfo.harley-davidson....1?locale=en_US

Seen the video, but...
They're not even front or rear wheel wheel specific, you just need to write down the "code" that is on each one of the sensors, so you know which one you put in the front and which you put in the rear (in case the "wand" doesn't read them and you have to manually enter the code)... so when its time, you enter the correct code for the one that's in the front tire and the right code for the one that is in the rear tire so its showing up right on the display. That way it's not showing your rear tire is low, when its actually the front

There is just one set of sensors currently for sale by HD (2, if you count the ones for the Pan American, which are 116 degree valve stems instead of 90 degree valve stems). RDRS is optional on most bikes, but TPMS is absolutely doable, even according to HD, on all the newer Touring bikes with security (2020-2023). There is no RDRS qualifier in the fitment guide.

On the 2017 thru 2019 models (Touring with security) they all have the correct BCM (HD #41000341x) in them from the factory to do TPMS, but HD shows them as not compatible to do TPMS because the stock gauges on those can not display TPMS and/or they do not have the dummy light on the gauges (but it will still display the TPMS on the GT or the GTS radio)... then there's the whole valve stem hole size issue to deal with 11.4mm or 8.3mm, and HD's TPMS valve stems are made for 8.3mm holes... and there's a way around that too. On the 2017 thru 2019 models TPMS is just disabled in the BCM.

I replaced the BCM in my 2016 RGU, the replacement BCM according to HD at the time 2 1/2 years ago was #41000341F, and then I added the very same TPMS sensors and it worked great until I traded it in a few months ago on a 2023 RGL. In 2017 HD started using the 41000341x (x=C in 2017) BCM in all touring models with security (same one as used in the CVO's), and that became the replacement BCM also for the 2014 thru 2016 model touring bikes after that (the revision letter changes about every year). That BCM has TPMS capabilities, if the sensors are installed and if TPMS is enabled in the BCM, doesn't matter if the bike has RDRS.

Thanks all for the replies… very informative.
I do have another question: The Turbine wheel that i’ll be installing the sensors is non-TPMS, so it may not have the sensor slot (see image).
Would that be an issue? Is there a workaround in case I'm not able to position the sensor?

Depending on the wheel you are using they make a 90 deg stem and an angled one one as well.

IF the slot in the wheels you are going to be using does not allow for sensor to sit inside the wheel you could use these valve stems and bracket. FWIW, I think the wheels will have a groove that will work...
https://www.southernmachinewheels.com/tpseadforafh.html

As for wheel/tire size there is a place in the diagnostic software to enter the tire size when doing this

What size valve stem hole do those wheels have? HD wheels have 8.3mm holes or 11.4mm holes, and the TPMS valve stems are made for the wheels with 8.3mm holes. Even if your wheels have the 11.4mm holes there is a work around for that too. These are my '16 Impeller wheels (front wheel in picture) with the 11.4mm holes, just put a "FOBO" rubber bushing in the hole from the inside, basically adding another "seal"....

then mounted the valve stem and sensor to the wheel..... worked fine for a few years, and was still going strong when I traded that bike in
