Greetings folks, my current whip is a 2011 Ultra Limited. Im an avid photographer and carry my gear in the tour trunk. Currently Im carrying 2 full sized bodies, flash and 5 lenses in a Domke F4. Ive added another full sized body. Anyone using a 20l or 30l backpack like the peak design that can comment or have a bag recommendation. Thanks
OP - Being a recently retired pro news-sports photographer who had 4-1DXs, lenses, blah, blah and more, youre carrying too much
I downsized to a SONY RX 10 IV. 24-600 optical Zeiss lens.
That and the $200 Topaz software replaced all that weight.
When I had all the big boy gear, and I rode to a job, I used a Domke shoulder bag in the tour pack.
Go to the B&H site and look at their photo back packs. And look at their used stuff. You can PM me as I still have 1-2 1DXs and a few lenses on cosignment locally.
The 7d and lense could be sacrificed. Its sole purpose is to wear while on the bike for on road shots. Ive had the 5dm3 since it came out but am not ready to risk it on the road. I do a lot of photos for our motorcycle group from meetings to events and rides. I primarily use a 24-105 and a 70-200 but carry a wide and a prime just in case. Mpb has been my go to lately for used gear. Ill be on the DSLR platform for a while.
Being a photographer you are most likely already familiar with B&H Photo. They have a ton of choices for all sorts of gear. Cases, bags, backpacks, pouches etc.
You want your gear padded and protected but do not want to take up a ton of space with the actual casing part. So for example, Pelican cases (or similar), as great as they are, would probably be too large for everything. Maybe not - you'd just have to measure. Personally I always try to think outside the box. So maybe consider various sleeves or pouches. Tons of various styles available from Amazon. Most with zippers. Some across the top. Some along the top/side. etc. etc. Sometimes you can get lucky with a tool bag or a padded laptop bag or messenger bag. Depending on what all you have, you may not be able to find ONE good case that fits everything nice and aligned geometrically like you want if you were using a vehicle... But on a bike it's gotta fit. And only YOU touch it. So "thrown in" so to speak but well-padded might be your solution. You, of course know where everything is and would be careful in and out. But the fewer "cases" the better. Maybe get creative with other bags and then use Pelican plick & pluck foam to customize it
Sort of related but I ended up using a padded laptop bag like this one for my everyday misc. stuff in my Heritage saddlebag. Lots of open space in the middle. Just one thin divider. A few small compartments on the inside
@Oko mentioned it, but Ill say it, too. Youre carrying too much gear. Do you really need 3 bodies and 5 lenses to take photographs of your motorcycle group? Those bodies, L glass and batteries must weigh 20-25 pounds.
