The sun visor is removable, but that's one of the most important thing to me, blocking the sun when you're riding straight into it, which happens a lot here in Florida. Very dangerous. Had a Mag 8 for years that works well, just worn out.
For fair weather rides, I love the Microdot.
Side note - looking back, it's somewhat surprising given I never wore a helmet for many years early on. Then went to non-DOT novelty helmets when California adopted the helmet law, and have migrated to 3/4...then modular...and now FF which I would not ride without. I also tend to be very cheap, but head protection falls into the exception, so I'll be cracking the wallet.
Good luck with your search OP. Ride safe.
Most of the more expensive helmets do not provide more protection, but provide more wear-ability. Ventilation, vision, shapes and comfort are what the more expensive helmets provide.
I now know what Arai and Shoei helmets fit my oval head. HJC does also. But on the longer (and hotter) riding days, the comfort and ventilation is very helpful!
The Best of Harley-Davidson for Lifelong Riders
flow over the wearers head, at least while moving.
That actually works and makes riding much better. Especially for those of us in certain areas.
I have never tried a Shoei, or any high-priced helmet, but my helmets have always been DOT approved. And since splitting my chin
when it hit the street during the roll, slide, and bounce that happens because of an accident they have always been FF too.
And some FF helmets of the last few years are much better in vision too, so it helps to shop around and try a few on.
It may not be fair, but it is possible to try on a helmet locally and order the same helmet from some other place.
If I try on a helmet in a store, if it fits, I will buy from that store. I did wait until I got found the Arai Regent-X on sale, and I had a Cycle Gear coupon/rewards that took off another 10%! But I still purchased from the store.
Once I know what helmet fits me, I may order a replacement (when it is time) from The Helmet Shop online. For Arai and Shoei, I just call them and get good prices.
I join the OP with the lightest weight options and look to Carbon Fiber.
But, some CF are not as light as "standard" or most recognized and proven helmets like Arai and Shoei.
CF seems to overall offer a weight saving of 1 lbs or less.
Since crashing sucks, I do not look toward modular FF helmets.
My wife (who rides with me 80% of the time I'm on the bike) had a car accident involving a head injury years ago that still has lasting effects. Because of weight, she has been wearing a 1/2 helmet.
She would prefer to also wear a FF/Modular but the added weight causes headaches & nausea. Because of the "relatively" light weight of the Neotec II, and my experience with mine, she got fitted for one and was willing to try again.
Unfortunately the same results...headaches & nausea. OK...next let's try a Carbon Fibre so she got fitted for the new HJC RPHA 91 CB. First ride out with it and I had to pull over so she could get it off her head...not good.
Fortunately her 1/2 helmet was in the TP to wear for the rest of the day out. All good after she switched helmets. When we got back home I'm thinking "what the hell"?!? This HJC is carbon fibre...it should be so much lighter.
Still had the Neotec II here so I got the scale out and weighed them both. To my shock, the HJC RPHA 91 Carbon Fibre was a "hair" heavier at 1627 grams compared to the Neotec II at 1624 grams. By comparison, her 1/2 is 1135 grams.
The thought also crossed my mind that maybe the "closed in" effect to the FF/Modular was causing the issues as opposed to the "openness" of the half helmet. Nope, tried an open face 3/4 HJC with the same unfortunate results.
All this to say, buying a new helmet is a tricky game and involved process...and don't believe all the "hype". Good Luck!
