The 2 or 3 time I've replaced the rear tire since I installed the new axle I automatically out of habit held the left side with a wrench while torquing the nut, so I don't know if that's true or not. 🤔
Same here, but I am getting ready to install the new wheels and tires (likely next weekend, still doing exhaust) , so I will test the theory and see if the new style requires it.
I do like the new style, having gone back and forth on getting one of the new fancy axle kits with positive stops. If I end up building a 132 next winter, I might consider it, again. So far, so good.
I did end up finding my tension gauge Can't believe I forgot I bought one, and have let my buddy 200 miles away check it before we run off on long trips
I saw a video of a Harley mechanic torqing the new style axle, andvhe wasn't holding the other side.
I called 3 dealerships around me, and no one has the new axle. It's $89 and a week wait. So I decided to clean mine up.
Cleaning off the nut side was simple with antiseize and paper towels. For the other side, I didn't want to remove the axle, so I pushed it out about a 1/2" and was able to clean it up, which took a little more time. Both sides had some antiseize in wrong places, I am certain that was my problem.
Everything is all back together and tightened two spec. I don't expect a problem, but I will be checking it after the next several rides. If all is well, then I'll probably stay put until the next tire change, and then I'll upgrade.
I have an axle from my '22 (I've bought new one when I was chasing rear end wobble, long story, turned out to be a tire). You can have it, where in PA are you, I might get to Gettysburg in a week or so.

Maybe he was using this tool to hold the left side stationary. It's what I use.
It allows me to stand on the right side to torque the axle nut without worrying about the left side moving.

Yeah I've seen those. If you want to check out the video, the channel is called sickwideglide, and the video is
"What's Belt Deflection? How to measure and why."
15min mark.

Just gotta remember to take it back off when you're finished torqueing the nut, lol! Luckily they stay put for a LONG time if you forget..........

I watched the video. Needless to say I won't be subscribing to his channel. He's working on a 2022 Street Glide ST. After torquing the axle to 110 foot pounds he says "I would love to tell you that I know everything but the truth is I don't. I'm somewhat of an idiot and if you follow what I do then that's your fault".
