Drivers License is NOT sufficent. You will also need your Birth Certificate untill the passport law goes into effect.

Detroit is the closest, we have 2 crossings here, one is a bridge, one a tunnel. A few miles furter, is Port Huron, a Bridge there, but in between, is the town of Marysville. its sits on the St. Clair River, and has a ferry that crosses every 30 minutes with no reservation requiered. last time I used it, I think it was 2-4 dollars to cross.

Best of luck, and enjoy the area. I used to live down by you, many moons ago. I lived and worked in the Big Easy..Long time since I have been back...

Take your birth certificate too...but when coming back make sure to have the right amount of money for the toll...border control can be rough on US citizens coming back,,,,,,had a canadian friend warn us of that.

Folks lived all their lives in Slidell til Katrina. Their now in Covington.

Driver's license and Birth Certificate. Make sure your Birth Certificate has the raised seal and not a copy.

I went into Canada (this past July)from New York and exited at Port Huron, MI and was never asked for any ID.

The Canadians have uniforms, guns and everything
The guns are a real recent thing, in fact MOST guards haven't been issued with them yet. They had been fighting for years to get them and it just came through.

Depends where you cross and what time and day of the week it is.

Yes, they have border crossings just like into Mexico. The Canadians have uniforms, guns and everything. As a rule though they are more polite than the US Customs and Immigration officers.

Detroit is busy and they are more thorough there than they would be at Portal, North Dakota. Also the lesser traveled the crossing the more likely it is to close at night like the one outside of Haines, Alaska.

If you know where you are going to cross you could spend a few minutes of your time and look it up on the web. Peoria is a hellova long way from the Canadian border with literally hundreds of places to cross.
I don't know about the Canadian border guys being nicer, I work at a border crossing on the U.S. side and I hear complaints all the time about them being rude.. It just depends on the person you get, whether it be the US or Canadian side some are dicks and some arent. Some may breeze you through and some will grill you. One thing for sure is if you have any kind of criminal record whatsoever, even if it was from many years ago, it may cause you to be denied entry into Canada.
As for the ID, drivers license and birth certificate is fine. Passports after Jan 08.

I went into Canada about 4 years ago from Pennsylvania side.
Wife, daughter, son who was 1 yr old, and a friend of my daughter.
Didnt have plans to go to Canada just a last minute thing.
All I had was driver license and no kind of ID for daughters friend.
The Canadians made me pull over and they serched the entire truck.
They put every thing back like they found it and were very professional and courteous.

Now coming back into the US into buffalo NY the border gaurd was a real azz.
I was going to Canandiaga NY to pick an item up that I won on E-Bay and when I told the guy how the guy in Buffalo acted he said that a couple weeks before they had caught 6 terorist trying to come accross there and that they were now in jail.
Went to the falls and have to say was one of the best trips Ive ever taken and first time out of the US
