I wonder if it would be better to go to the dealer where I bought the bike or the local dealer down the road.

Carry 2 keys with me and 2 fobs with me. Carry one set in my pocket and 1 set in my vest.
Call the dealer you bought yer bike, from yer serial number they can cut you some keys from yer vin number.

Yes key can be removed on my 07 Ultra in the run postion. I only use the key to lock or unlock the ignition other than that it stays in my pocket at all times.

My bike only came with one key, so I ordered some spares from the dealer. Aces & Eights HD in Mason, OH charged me $12 for two new keys, which I thought was a fair price for factory-made keys. I just had to give them the VIN number. I'll be picking them up today or tomorrow.
The locksmith in town was unable to copy the standard blade key ('06 Sportster). It wouldn't even fit in the bike's ignition.

But unless you dedicate yerself to motorcycles you can't carry all the blanks to must mfg or motorcycles. And their supply house don't let em just come in and buy a few blanks of one kind, they want you to buy a box of em according to how they are packaged. You can fill shelves and walls up with motorcycle keys.
I'm glad dealers are offering to cut keys for bikes at good rates.

Sorry to hear about your loss. Just plan a trip to that piece of road each day to walk a section of it. maybe you'll find them.
