Homer- How do you keep your bike from blue flaming the guys that arent yuppies? Or when you say wannabie yuppie bikers do you mean guys that wanna be yuppies or wannabe bikers? Just having fun.
OMG People have done this and they have no idea why? It is not for the looks, it is not to keep the heat off your leg. It is done to maintain a more constant temp. inside the pipes for performance reasons. If you don't understand the process I can't explain it.
You mean you won't explain it to us because you don't think we'll understand?....Most of us aren't as dumb as we look... JK
I'm glad I've had my pipes wrapped. Did them a couple of years ago. Just came back from a trip and decided to rewrap the pipes since my "black" ones were now tan colored and stained. Took the rear one off and found the head pipe completely cracked and broken in two places. The wrap kept everything in place and if it wasn't for the wrap I would have had some downtime on the trip waiting for a replacement.
Did some welding for the time being...until the new pipes show up...and rewrapped them.
also if you areanal the least little bit an irritating process to do to satisfaction.
That's what I figured. I'm not the type of person that goes nuts over a ding, but I am the kind of person that would want that wrap to be done very well. lol... After the story above from "Paniolo," I may not really consider it anymore. I do really like the way it looks, though. Kinda like a boxer with his hands wrapped before the gloves are on. I think it's badass.
If you really like the look and want to try it, pick up a used set of pipes (ebay might be a good place to look) to wrap. Keep your current pipes so you can put them back on if you have any problems. If every thing works out and you like the wrapped pipes, sell your current pipes. That way you aren't out much either way.

Header wrap on a motorcycle will not enhance performance and if it does in any way,it's not enough to be noticeable. You're not gonna get performance gains by wrapping your pipes in fiberglass tape......sorry.Like someone mentioned earlier ,it's a poorman's heatshield and it doesn't look bad either.
Some say soak it, some say wrap 'em dry.I've wrapped a buch of pipes and what I do is cut my lengths and lay them out in the drive way. Then I'll mist them with a spray bottle so they get a little damp but not soaked. The dampness just makes it more plyable and a little easier to handle. It's real easy to do and there's really no right or wrong way to do it as long as your overlaps are fairly even and tight. If you want that perfect look, DEI actually has lines to follow for a perfect 1/4" overlap.Advanced Auto sells a 50' x 2" roll for $40.00.Don't pay double from J&P or any other "motorcycle" shop. There are also some good dealsfor DEI on eBay too.

Never said gains. From what I have found thru research is that it was originally done to keep a more constant temp inside the pipes so the performance would be more constant. And the reason I can't explain it is because I can't understand it myself! [8D]
