Ona ride today, I stopped for gas and tried to fill up standing on the right side of the bike--very awkward. The nozzle slipped out and I washed down the tank and fairing around the ignition and switches. O great! sez I, thinking I shorted out the wiring or messed the connections up somehow. But after I wiped off the spill, everything seemed to be working just fine. I share this stupid action of mine in hopes that someone will gain from my mistake.
What I hate is when the pump nozzle has the device that you have to push in on by pushing the nozzle in deep. I like to fill my tank, not half way, and this thing makes it a pain.
I occasionally still get a drop or two on the tank, but it evaporates quick, and if I'm concerned I get the squeegy out and clean it off.
The other one to watch for is splashback from a fast flowing pump. It's amazing how much gas can squirt back up through the hole! I washed the whole fuel tank in gas the other day doing that. Nice! [:@]
I always stand on the right side of the bike while filling. Pull back the epa rubber boot with one hand and use the other to operate the pump. Not bad once you get used to it although it is difficult to keep it from splashing back out at all...New idea...Gas stations with motorcycle filling attendants only as we as considered HOV vehicles at least in CA. (High Occupancy Vehicles) For free of course.
