Default I66 NoVA commute?

Anyone here commute on I66 in NoVA? Looking for any riders who have some experience they could share on making the best of the ride. I don't plan on riding into work very often, but there are some days I'd love to crank up the Fat Bob and cruise on in.

Stay in either the far left or far right lane. The middle is a dead man's land. As for making the best ofthe ride, got an iPod? It's going to be slow and long if you're riding it during rush hour, especially if you have to go inside the beltway.

It is doable, I rode it many a day when I lived in NoVA depending on where I had to go for my job that day.

I'm in Falls Church - just down the Route 7 exit inside the beltway (first exit). I usually get off on the beltway and loop up Fairview Pkwy, but with HOV I could just get off at 7. Lots of stop and go in the mornings, even in the HOV; but the afternoons are usually alot better - its the afternoon ride that looks more enjoyable.

Nearly every day, from Linden exit 13 to Fair Lakes exit 55. Why wouldn't you ride to work every chance you get? Traffic-wise, it takes some getting used to from the Haymarket-Gainesville area eastward, but the ability to use the HOV lanes cuts down on the commute time. Another poster said to stay in either the right or left lanes and that's mostly true, but using the HOV lane puts you in the left lane 99% of the time anyway, except when entering or exiting. Give it a try, you'll be fine.

It's definitely not as bad as the Greenway / Toll Road. I used to work in Herndon and would wind my way up through farm country to catch the Greenway near Ashburn. Approaching the main toll booths on the north side of Dulles was a pure free-for-all, really had to keep my head on a swivel. I-66 is a breeze compared to that.

The only time I ever lane split was when i lived in DC- sat in dead stop traffic on the way to bolling AFB from vienna....... Not a trip-- bike or car that I would choose to do if I had the choice......

But if I had to, I'd do it on the bike; fits in smaller places

Just watch your back side man.....we run the I-66 corridor from Pr. Wm. County to the Beltway. I find that probably 65-70% of the accidents we run are when the sun is bright. Folks are running at speed & don't see the stopped traffic. I ride most everyday out of Gainesville to Chantilly. Ride safe !!!
