Default How do you ride these things? (Fast)

.. Okay, really what I am asking is: How do you ride a big V-Twin properly to make it move?

Stock torque comes on around 3-3.3k rpm, and depending on your setup you can then see hp increase 'till you are at redline. (I don't know if your torque comes one earlier with other setups).

Do you are sitting at a light, or better yet, at one end of the drag strip... what do you do?

Please tell me if I'm wronge, my inclination would be to let the clutch out at a rate that would keep me right around 3000rpm until it is all the way out, then shift at around 5000rpm...

What do you all think, esspecially those of you who run 1/4 miles at the track. I have not been out there yet with the Harley, but hope to go soon... I think it's a blast.

First....twist the throttle all the way till it stops

Second....release clutch quickly...you'll ALWAYS be in the torq. band with this technique

...hmmm...

I think this forum could use a "Riding Technique" section. Talk all we want about rear wheele hp/tq, it don't make a bit of difference (well maybe a bit) if you are not riding the think correctly...

I am sure many of you have had the pleasure of beating a crotch rocket light-to-light becase the driver is clueless , and either over-revs or lugs their engine a little too much...

He he.

Having drag raced with my 80 hp chopper, I'd say your technique of slipping off the line is correct. With practice you should be able to just lift the front wheel when you launch for max accel. The torque and hp curves are almost flat on most HD from 2000 to 5000 so there's no need to overrev, you'll just break something.
If you use cwilks method you will be sliding down the track on your *** under your flipped bike unless you have a real drag bike with a slipper clutch.

Sarcasm should be noted lest someone ends up hurt.

Keepit tight and don't lug it! I don't have a tachon mine, but I keep the revs tight and it always moves when I want it to. Ialmost neverhit 5th gear before 60mph on my mostly stock TC88. I do have Pythons, S&S super E and an SE ignition module on it.

If you're draggin it, then yeah, get the revs up in the 3K range and drop the hammer. Hang on.

What would you define at over-rev? My tach is marked with a redline at 5.5k, and my limiter has been moved to 6.5, someone was saying here earlier (on a different thread) that the 96A engine could really be reved to 7.2.... seems excessive, but with my current setup it feels like it's pulling hard up to almost 5.5k, but I also know that feel is not always right, and maybe I would get better accel. if I shifted sooner...

Have rev limiter set if your is broken. Mine is around 6500 to 6800 rpm's.
1 st. gear around 45mph
2nd. gear around 70mph
