Been on Syn 3 since 1,000 miles. Now at 8,500 stilll fine! Maybe I don't know any different- Ignorance is bliss but a little knowledge isa dangerous thing for me!
I went to Harley syn. at the 1000 mile service and noticed a difference right away. No problems at all and lots less heat on the legs. I will continue with it as until I dont own her anymore.
it's not critical what fluid you run in the primary. it's major purpose is to pull heat from the clutch housing and lubricate the chain. any lubricant will do that. i prefer ATF as the clutches get some moisture and ATF is formulated for use around clutch material. the gear lube weight might not cool the best but certainly won't harm anything.
I just use SYN3 in all three holes. People can second guess the manufacturer all they want. I'm not. Bike runs great, shifts great and I just run the hell out of it. When / if it breaks, it gets fixed. When it blows up, in goes an S&S. I don't have time to get freaky about oil and didn't buy the thing to worry over it. I kinda think my bikes were made to ride, not worry about. I feel better now....
New bikes will have metal on the magent. That is normal for the first service, you have all new compants that are breaking in.
Thats what my thoughts where on the availablity of neutral, or should I say unavailability.
My bike just doesn't want to go into neutral while running. But while running I can make a 4 point u turn in my garage, so my thinking is/was the clutch is engaging just fine, but its the new parts that are getting to know each other.
I've only got 350 miles on the bike, I'll wait till the 1000 mile mark before I get worried. But isn't that what warranties are for?
I also have trouble finding neutral, with the bike off it slips right in but my bike only has 50 miles on it so after a few hundred I am switching to synthetic as well. I have read several threads about what type of lube is best and it seems to me the synthetic has dominated...this is a quote that I think fits the bill for me :
"I would recommend synthetic Mobil1 V Twin in the motor, synthetic gear lube in the trans (like Mobil 75/90) and HD primary oil in the primary which I find works better than synthetics because of the friction modifiers in most engine oils.It gives you a better feel to the clutch than synthetics do."

Did you get that problem resolved? I have an '06 Street Bob with the same problem. I can only shift into neutral when the bike is not running. Saw the posts about changing the oil...and that may help. I called the local stealer and they didn't have a clue what I was talking about. I'm taking it in tomorrow to have them look at it. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks.
