A friend of mine brought his `08 SG over a week ago and I changed his fluids for him. What was harley thinking when they put those garbage torx head bolts on the derby cover, etc.New tool, new bike, trashed the head on one bolt and had to drill the head off to fill the primary.I told him as soon as it went up in the air that those bolts had to go.I told him to buy assorted allen"kits" to start replacing the crappy silver bolts around his bike and his eyes lit up when I showed him all the chrome gardner-wescott smoothies on my bike.It seems that the bolts they use are the extra shallow ones that aren`t deep enough for the tool to get a good bite.Probably put them on so more guys would buy the good ones.Toby
Sorry, have to ask what size torx did you use? The primary cover on my '07 uses a #27. 27 is an unusual size and not found n most common sets. A 25 ismuch more common and it will seem to fit but will end up stripping the head.
Why would they use such an uncommon size fastener for an area that people have to get into often enough.I just looked #27 up and I see one in the snap-on variety.I used a 25 ,for I never heard of a 27 until now.I learned something today.Thanks.Toby
Yea, they are a little hard to find. I just found a set this weekend at Sears on sale for $9.99. Whenyou pick up a #27 also get a #45, also hard to find. I bought an engine guard recentley and spent the rest of the day trying to find a #45 to install it.
I scratch my head when people think allen head bolts are that much better then Torx or Torx Plus. Use the right size torx, better yet use a high quality torx bit, and they will resist stripping the head better then allen heads ever will.

Nothing wrong with Torx fasteners. Try using the correcttool rather than diverting the blame with "what was Harley thinking"...
