Default Restoring an older Sportster - tank question.

In going through an uncle's garage after he passed away, his wife ran across an older (70-'s) sportster. I've been able to clean it up, take apart the engine, clean the carbs, check the electrical etc. The fuel tank had gas left in it for years. The inside is rusted and gunked up pretty bad. Is there a way to clean this or just try to find a replacement tank?

Been there restoring and old Honda.. Tied my best to clean up the tank but just didn't work out.. Ended up replacing it.. You might be better off also.. time wise.. Cost wise may break out about even providing you can get it sand blasted out then going through the re-sealing and then pressure testing only to discover a hole! I'd replace it

Fill the tank with a mild acid solution and some glass marbles. Let it set awhile, then cap and shake. Drain through the petcock so you won't ruin the paint. If you're not worried about the paint have it dipped at a radiator shop.

Noticed you said "carbs", as in more than one. Mis-type, or is this not a typical Sporty, but an XR?

all of the above is good advice
you should also look into some pink stuff for a sealer for the tank

70's sporty Peanut tanks can be found on E-Gay
I have a Mustang tank in the shed if you want to go that route but I think there is also a sporty tank in my Bro's garage that might be had for a few bucks plus shipping

You can get a Custom Chrome unpainted standard gas tank for 55-78 Sportster for $90.99 from DennisKirk.com.

I agree with the above advice, you will be much better off with a new tank instead of trying to clean and reseal the old one. It will be a lot less aggrivating as well!

Thanks for the advice, both on cleaning and a source for replacing it. The bike is in amazing condition except for that. I've taken pretty much everything else apart and cleaned and tested. Even the paint is in remarkable condition. It looks like he had a lot of toys and this one was in the shed under a tarp. Really a nice looking bike. I'll post a pic or two when I get it up and running.
