+1 on the mobile. You wouldn't need much to do simple oil changes and parts installs. I'm too busy with my biz and it's cheaper for me to pay someone to do that kind of stuff than for me to take the time to do it.
One of the best mobile services I've seen is the Man from Mars (Mobile Auto Restoration Services). Just take a look at the success of the Geek Squad at Best Buy - I knew Dick Schultz (CEO & founder)when he had 3 stores in Minneapolis.
I'd bet that the members on this site could come up with a knock out name/acronym like that for your Harley services.
I'll start with BEAST: Biker Emergency Assistance Services Tech.
The same reason your out of work right now is the same reason dealers are not hireing....its the Winter.....it does get a bit colder even in Ca.
I am from the NYC Metro area, and I know exactly how you feel.....I workedservice Dept's.for many years in several dealerships....turning wrenches like a ****. The ONLY time the dealer kept me on over the winter was when I got to be service manager......and they asked me to do the service writer job to boot.....it was either that or the unemployment line.
Relocate to Arizona, we ride all year 'round and NEVER a shortage of work ! Local " indy " just hired another mechanic, he's swamped ! There's 6 H/D dealerships in the Phoenix area alone, and 14 statewide, who knows how many indy shops .
Dude I would in a heart beat give ya my business but I'm like 2500 miles from ya..All I can say is be persistent,,don't give up on a dream. With the back round you will succeed.
I myself am waiting work.Thats a norm.with my profession ..I.U.O.E. The economy is so stale ,money tight, with business paranoid theres going to be a big crash.
you want to move a little to the south ?
I am currently talking with with a guy about taking over his shop
and buying him out (retirement time)
of course you would have to learn pans and shovel as well as machine shop work
Also Vacaville HD and Vallejo HD are both under new ownership

Vallejo is too far of a commute andI won`t go back to vacaville. They do have new owners but the management is still the same people. I`m considering the mobile service thing. That might be a little easier to get going than a full blown shop course I would have to raise my service price abit. Right now i only charge $150 for a 1k, 5k, and 10k on 2000 up bikes. pre 2000 bikes are a little more for the 10k because of the wheel seals and wheel bearing inspection and 20k`s for both are a little more as well because of the tie to change the fork oil.I`ll have to look into it more.I really don`t want to go to any indy shops because they don`t offer the same training/schooling that a delaership does. I appreciate all of the suggestions though. you guys are great.
If ya still need work after this weather clears up , I need my 5,000 ans stage 1 completed on my 1200 sportster custom. Would be well worth the trip I think! From the carson city area! Good luck!
