I agree. I know my opinion isn't very popular but I put them in the same category as cell phones. Like cell phones they require multi-tasking and that's when bad things can happen.

Maybe another category with "sometimes" would be appropriate.

If you are leading a group of 100+ bikes in a funeral procession and hit traffic caused by an accident, or construction, a GPS sure comes in handy. I don't ride with mine unless I'm leading a PGR group or am on a reeeeally long trip. I bought my TomTom Rider2 specifically for my Dallas to Alaska ride this summer.

Your opinion is simply wrong. You have no experience to base it on. I do. Many thousands of miles ridden with my Zumo. It's no more distracting than looking at your speedo occasionally. In fact, it's LESS distracting than looking at my speedo, since I only need to glance to my left slightly, rather than look down at my console.

And it's really a valuable tool. Much safer to follow it's lead than to pull over on the side of a busy highway to look at a map. Plus it has tons of places like food/lodging/gas stations programmed into it. I never have to worry about getting lost, so I am free to just ride aimlessly, and when I fell like heading home, just press "Home" and it takes me there. It guided me through 2600 miles of roads I'd never ridden in the Northeast USA last summer, without ever leading me astray.

Cheers!

I usually like to ride alone starting early on a Sunday morning. I just go where the road takes me sometimes for hours on end. I use the GPS when I feel like coming home. I can get the fastest most direct route. This method leaves me more time for exploring. Incidentally, I also fly aiplanes. They are a necessary tool and not a distraction.

I guess thats why I make the payments on my bike, so I can do what I want on it. It seems like around here people want to use a cookie cutter of their ideals to shape everybody else, if you don't want one, fine, great, thats your choice. I say "Just ride and keep your opinions to your self"

I bought a gps for the timesI go out riding and get totally lost.Pull over off the road, punch in "home" or "gas station"and the gps voice prompts will guide you to your destination. I dont think its any more distracting than looking at yourfuel gauge, spedo etc. and its way easier than getting a map outon a windy day. My point is itslike everything else in life, you need to use common sense...................BG
