You can be a member of National HOG and not have to join a local chapter if you don't care to. National HOG dues vary depending on if you want a yearly, 3-year or life membership. Currently, the Full Memberships run $45.00 for a 1-year, $85.00 for a 2-year and $120.00 for a 3-year, which is the best deal, but costs more up front. Associate memberships are available for the same terms for $25.00, $45.00 and $65.00. The HD site posts no information on the rates for the Life Membership, likley to be about $500.00 or so anymore.

As far as a local Chapter membership, $20.00/year after your first year. Some like to ride with groups (at the group pace), it does provide a social gathering tool if you're in to that and the Chapter members are really into riding and not just "looking the part". For me, I joined my local dealer's HOG chapter and have been very happy with the activities and people I've met. Some have had bad experiences going to meetings and bacically crusing in between coffee bars. Posers, RUBS, call them whatever you want, but I'd rather ride with someone that actually bought a Harley, Ricer or something else to ride it and not park it to look "oool". That's just my opinion, no slam intended on anyone, just that I'd rather ride than park with my Harley.

Took me about 5 weeks to hear back from HOG National ... but if you have your VIN number, call them and they'll look it up and see if you have been registered and are just waiting on the mail.

Is it required that you belong to the National HOG to be a member of a Local Chapter?

Yes it is. When you sign the Application and Release form at your local HOG chapter, they ask you for your HOG membership number and expiration date. My understanding is that if your National HOG membership lapses or is cancelled for some reason, you stand to lose your local chapter membership also.

so aside from the joy of cameraderie (or however you spell it), what other member benefits are there? I've been a member 3 times (3 different bikes) and haven't done anything with it. Do they give you coupons you can use somewhere besides just the dealership??

How good or bad a local chapter is depends a lot on the dealership. Here in Columbus, OH, we've been fortunate, because Farrow's HD is very much behind HOG and picks up most of the expenses, including membership costs. Likewise, the members seem more like riders and less like posers. I've been on some rides where the temps never got out of the 30's but still a couple hundred peoplel showed up.
As far as other benefits, you do get the towing insurance good for one tow. That's probably worth it. For about $20 more, you get unlimited towing which is definitely worth it.
I am not a big club joiner; in fact, most of them have no attraction for me as too much emphasis is placed on eating and/or drinking rather than riding or wrenching. I'm not super active in this club either, but I do enjoy it.

One of the biggest benefits I've found of being a HOG member is the Fly&Ride program. I just booked two Road Glides out of Vegas this June for one week: $600 + tax (includes insurance). If you try to rent for one week through an authorized dealer or Eaglerider, you're looking at almost $1000 with the same insurance.
