Hello to all, I have a question for all you experience HD owners:
My new softail is at the time for it's first service, oil change and etc....
I was wondering Do I have to go to the dealership for the first service and spend the $308 charge or can I go somewhere else?
Thanks I thought I would get a better answer here than asking the dealership.
I took mine to the dealer only because I travel on biz all week and prefer to ride onweekends, not wrenchin the garage. If the dealer finds something wrong with your bike they'll fix it under warranty. Independent shops will charge you for the parts/labor.
My thought, also. But if they didn't, thenfollow the rest, get a manual, DIY, and take some time to "get to know" your scoot. "Try it, You'll liikkkke it ! !" A little knowledge gained this weekend will pay dividends down the road.
As a new harley owner as of last Aug here is my 2 cents. Do it your self, as everyone has said BUY A SERVICE MANUAL. I am not a wrench by any means, but the service manual has allowed me to do all my own work. I am just finishing us winter work, all involved I have had the rear of the bike totally apart, completely dissembled forks, changed out and rewired handlebars, new cables, new turnsignals front and real, etc etc. I never thought I could do these things but the service manual is the best money I have spent on the bike and I have had a great time learning (even from the mistakes). Also the understanding of the bike will be invaluable is you are ever stuck on the side of the road.

...if you take it to a dealer don't have them wash it then you can tell if they did everything by they're fingerprints and oil residue everywhere......
i talked to independent servicers, they recommended hd do the first service. that way they can spot anything that the un-trained eye might miss. i supplied the fluids that i wanted to use. hd oil is a product of citgo (venesula),(sp) \\;(as i read here), and i wont give a dime to circle k for their gas. i went with with mobil1 v-twin by recommendation from a lot of hdf boys and lucas stabilizer because i like what i saw in their demo, with lucas 85-90 in the tranny.
