First time I ride a bike I just fill it up full run it until reserve comes on and then see how many miles I went. I run my 98 Sporster with peanut tank to about 130 miles before I fill. that is right around the point where I need reserve.

2003 Sporty 883c.

3.30 gallon tank. How many miles per gallon should I expect from her. Does anyone have a link on harley mpg's. I did a quick search but found zip.

Thanks
Fill up your tank to the very top. Be careful not to spill gas.
Reset odometer.
Ride.
When gas light lights up, go refill your tank, to the same very top level.
Note down how many gallons of tank you put in the tank.
Note down odometer reading.
Reset odometer.

To get mileage, divide miles you noted down by gallons you put in tank.
That is your TRUE average mileage.
Repeat this for 1 year, noting down miles and gallons on a spreadsheet.
This will allow you to monitor increase / decrease of fuel consumption as well as your average monthly mileage and fuel consumption.
This will also minimize errors from inexact refuelling.
After one year you'll be able to calculate your yearly average TRUE mpg, to observe in which period of the year you rode more miles, in which period of the year you had the best mileage and in which the worst.

+1. this is the only way to get a true. clear picture
Has anyone ever called you guys Obsessive - compulsive? I follow my fill-ups for about a month of normal riding (don't use a spread sheet). At the moment I have just had my first service and I'm getting about 36 mpg.

HAHA! I'll do it once or twice.

I forgot to mention, typical riding I get 48-50 mpg and if I'm strictly highway I've gotten anywhere from 52 (REALLY windy) to 58

Never have figured it out but know it does a lot better than my full size SUV and car combined!!!! With gas heading to $4 a gallon this summer, I plan to ride my bikes a lot more than I have in the past...

1. Fill up
2. Take off and go about 100 miles.
3. Stop & fill up.
4. Take miles driven & divide by gallons needed for fill-up.
5. Repeat a couple of times and that should give you an average of what you can expect realistically.
Why go just 100 miles? Why not ride until your next fill up? Then continue with your procedure. It'll give you a more accurate MPG reading. Additionally, riding in wind will severely affect your mileage.
I was using some basic math as an example. Your way works the same. But It's easier to divide 2.5gallons into 100 miles(40 MPG)in your head than 3.1 gallons into 167 miles.

I just use the calculator built into my cellphone. 52mpg on the carbed Softail the other day with the wife riding it. 44mpg for me on the Ultra.
