I tried a Chatterbox. Total junk. Sent it back for a refund. I don't think you're going to find a cheap intercom system that'll work worth a damn.

My brother in law and I tried walkie talkies with throat mikes using vox. Didn't work worth crap. Eventually we might try a better system but it isn't that important.

My opinion on intercoms and all, is that I'm surrounded by people running their mouths, pagers, and cell phones everywhere I go...a necessary evil to us all at times, myself included...but when I ride I want to get away from all that...if you want to communicate with me when I'm riding, a hand signal will do...

If used w/ moderation I believe it can be a useful tool when riding 2 or more. Constant blabbering could lead to damaging consequence like you said. If all riders in the loop are on the same page and can exercise silence discipline except where expected (gas stops, alerts and other riding nomenclature) it can be a useful tool.

Just purchased a couple helmets and installed intercom's from J&M as advertised here on the HD forum and will let you know how that works out.

We use a chatter box system, it works not great but it works. we can play music and talk to each other. I got it off ebay for 40 bucks so I am happy with it. for 200 I would of been pissed.

Absolutely right on! 30 years working for the Telephone Co. Phones ringing, cell phones vibrating, pagers beeping......

Bought very loud pipes (Pythons) so I couldn't hear anyone.

Autocom. They make several different models. I would go with the Active Plus as a minimum. You can add CB, bike to bike, music , GPS, radar detector, and cell phone. The Active Plus comes with the music and cell phone cable. It is totally voice activated. The music automatically mutes when you speak and when a phone call comes in. They are advertised to work up to 180mph, I don't know about that, but the music and cell phone sound like I am riding in the car at 85mph on the Interstate on my ST1300.
And before anyone flames me for talking on the phone while riding the bike, at least I wear a FF helmet, FF gloves, Armored jacket & pants and riding boots.
