Default trailer ????

I will be doing a work detail out in West Virginia. I was considering taking bike out with me to do some riding through mountains in the free time. The guy I'm workin with also rides but neither of us own a trailer. My question is has anybody rented a uhaul 5x8 and does it have enough room and tie points for 2 bikes. Dont have funds for a trailer but would really like to pull bike along...any suggestions? Any things I should keep in mind being I never had to trailer before. Thanks

You don't mention the model of bike. A bagger is about 41 inches across at the fairing so I am sure you would not get two in a 5 foot trailer. Smaller bikes maybe. I had a 7 by 10 and could put a bagger and fatboy in it. Also there is typically no support for the front wheel in a rented trailer. You could probably screw some 2 by 4s down to keep the wheel vertical. My .02.

No, I owned it. Sold it to a friend. Now I borrow it. Good deal, huh?

Seriously, the two bikes are still quite wide and might even be longer than 8 feet, but if you get a longer trailer you can stagger them. Is that the only size trailer you can get?

Can get a 5x10 or 6x12. But it must come from uhaul only thing near me. So i'm guessing the 6x12 would be better for two softtails, now that I think about it really no other choice. Just wondering if anyone has rented through uhaul and how you secure bike if they dont have tie pionts......fasten your own and remove before returning?

8' is too short for some Harley's. My Duece or Wide Glide will stick slightly out the back and worse, will lift the tongue. Dangerous - tail heavy on a trailer.

My Heritage is fine; both size and balance.

U-Haul has a M/C trailer but it's only good for 1 bike. They dont have tie points but the rail all around works ok. I imagine that all their trailers have the same system except for the kick out for the front wheel.

I hauled my Road King and my wife's Dyna in a U-haul 6 x 12 tandem-axle trailer a few years back. Tight, but had no problems. Had to load the bikes "nose to tail". Road King in first head first, then Dyna tail first. I had to make my own tie down attachments, as the floor is aluminum (didn't think I should drill thru it). I used 3/16" thick 1 1/2" aluminum angle and drilled holes for the tie downs and mounting bolts. The walls of the U-haul are bolted to the frame, I removed some of the bolts, then bolted my angle with longer bolts in the existing holes. Some work, but it worked.

how much will it cost you to rent a uHaul trailer? how long will you keep it? for the entire time you're working? or just to go back & forth?

check out craigslist for a new or used one. here in San Antonio, I'm finding new 6x12 trailersfor around $900, 5x10 for around $800. it might be acost advantage to buy one and then sell it when you get back.
