Default A Harley for 7k?

I am going to be selling my Jeep Cherokee (hopefully for about 7k) and I wont be able to spend any more than what I get for the Jeep on a bike. I also need to mention that this will be my first bike. I have been searching Craigslist and it seems that my options are a Sportster 1200 Custom or an older Dyna model.

Im 6'4" and a little worried that the sporty will be too small. I have sat on the 1200 custom and I do like the forward controls however Im not sure how it will feel for longer rides. Any info (pros and cons of each) you guys can give will be appreciated. Are there any other models I should look at instead?

Thanks
Mike

Look for a wide glide, hD's longest bike. I am 6'2" and I have a super glide custom with forward controls, no problems. I would definately rule out sporties with your height.

With a tight budget like that, you may have to make sacrifices in either comfort or vintage of bike owned. I'm sure a 1200 Sportster could get decked out to add to the comfort level of a longer inseamed individual. Regardless, good luck with it. Once your bike is in the garage, be sure to post some pics. Oh yeah...and sign up for an MSF crse if this is your first bike. Best to learn correctly from the get go.

I do plan to take the motorcycle safety course before I get my bike.

How reliable are the older dyna wide glides? I have seen some 90's that are in my price range.

Big mike, you have ANY ability to make a small payment each month? Just asking because 7K would be a hefty down payment on a great late model used bike. Granted, the feeling of outright owning the bike is awsaome Im sure and something Ill personally only get to experience in a few years (financed here). But that being said, see what kind of used bikes you can find at you local HD dealer. I know for a fact that Eaglemark (HD owned credit depatment) will finance used bikes. Usually you need a pulse to qualify. Didnt have the best credit in the world (not pretty in fact due to some stupid decisions I made when I was 18-19) and got a decent rate. Wasnt the world's best, but it was darn good for my situation. If you have decent to good credit, you should be able to qualify for a low rate. But this would definitely be something you would have to go in and talk to a salesguy first.

Dyna Wide Glide would probably be the HD that will comfortably fit your height as others have said. Used Softail Night train might work too. Im 5'6" and was totally strectched out just setting on it. But Wide Glide would be my first recommendation for you.

As far as the Sportster goes, its a great model bike. Actually had an XL 883 before I traded it two weeks later for my FatBoy. The sporty was fun, but I had always wanted a Fatboy. The 1200 Custom
would be a great bike to start with too. There are enough parts available out there for Hd's that if you get a bike, ANY bike, you'll be able to set it up they way that will make it comfortable and fun for you.

But as far as buy and ride fit for you, Wide Glide is what your looking for. Where are you from BTW?

Are you a wrench? IF so, there are a TON of older used FLH's around. Also FX series.

Is that enough to get your whistle wet? I purposely left ALL the Sportys off the list. You can buy 2 of them for 7k, right now.
Also have been seeing some early 90's baggers in that 7 - 9 category.
If they have the site straightened out, hit Cycletrader, punch in your info. You'll be pleasantly surprised at what is available for 7k.
I'm 6'6", and my first 'store' bought HD was a 76 XLCH. You can ride it, and do fwd controls, but IMFUO,a Sporty will "cramp" your lifestyle.

I have owned Sportsters in the past and I am 6'2 and I felt I was too tall for my Sportster. I did rake the front end and added forward controls, basically I made it work for me.

However saying that I did sale the Sporty and now have an older FXR (89). If you are wanting to buy a bike out right I would lean towards an newer EVO engine. 90-94 as they are dependable. You can always add forward controls to get it to feel confortable for you.

just my 2 cents

Good luck with your purchase and when you get it lets see some pictures.

Eagle Mark will also finance used bikes you buy from an individual. I'm thinking you'll be petty cramped up on a sportster. Good luck, and be patient, there's some good deals out there. Let us know what you came up with. I've gotta friend that has a 99 road king, it's just like my 06. Nothing in the world wrong with an older bike.

Yeah. You got a guy drunk and took advantage of the situation.

You're a real scumbag and nobody here approves of what you did. Just read the responses in your braggart thread.

Take it elsewhere and quit bragging about taking advantage of someone and robbing them.
