is going to the safety course in June!!!! I am so excited. We tried to get him in last year, but they werefull for the whole summer. We are now looking for a beginner bike for him. At 17 he wants a rocket. I have tried to get him on something else to no avail. At least he has agreed to get a small, used 250 to 450 something or other.
Talk about a proud Momma. I dun good![sm=happybounce.gif]
Good for him AND you. As for the bike, well...I'd think any 17 year old would want a crotch rocket. That said, maybe now's the time to let him know those rocket riders all look alike and the girls will really notice someone riding something different.....just a thought! Heck, you can get a nice Suzuki GZ250 for less than $4K brand spankin' new. Imagine what a used one would go for!
Congrats on raising a level-headed kid! EVERY kid wants a crotch rocket. Mine did until I let hm ride my WG. Has your son ridden yours? Tell him it has speed and agility, but the class of a Harley that discriminating chicks dig. [8D]
Who's paying for the bike? If you are, I would tell him to be happy with what he gets, or he won't get one at all. My wife and I were discussing this as a hypothetical the other night, and we agreed that if our son wanted to have a bike and wanted us to pay for it, it would be a dual purpose - still "cool" but not able to maintain those blistering crotch rocket speeds. With a bike built for a totally different purpose other than speed, hopefully he wouldn't fall into the "leave a mangled corpse" catagory....
I am the total opposite of the younger generation I guess. I never wanted a rocket, perhaps because I would probably look like a monkey screwing a football but for some reason I always wanted a cruiser. My first bike was/is a VStar 1100, and I ride my Dad's Street Glide more than it now. Afew of my friends wanted rockets but when they seen mine a couple of them changed their minds and got cruisers. But either way riding is riding. Congrats to your son.
My 19 year old is getting his permit in a few weeks when he's back from school. Then it's thesafety coursetoo. I'll take it with him for a special father & sonbonding moment

He has not been on any "real" type of cycle, just the little 50's and such. And of course my sporty is a "girl's bike". He is going to be buying both the bike and insurance for it, since I will have no part in paying for a rocket. I don't think it will be too long before he will be looking at something more comfortable for longer rides. He does want to go on road trips with me, and he doesn't realize my road trips are in the hundreds of miles, and rockets are not the best ride for that. And I gotta keep thinking "he's only 17, he's only 17"

...wait 'till he sees that insurance qoute for the rocket
Get him to try the VRSC line. I'm 23, but never wanted a rocket, in fact I'm more interested in them now than I was then...
Anyways, I wanted a Harley that was as fast as a rocket... Now I have one... I assume he wouldn't be looking at litre bikes right? 600ccish? I spent Saturday at the track spanking CBR after CBR at the dragstrip.
Look for a used/new 06/07(the only years they were made) VRSCR "Street Rod", it's the most sport-bike like in the line, best suspension Harley has ever stuck on a production bike, 110ish hp at the wheel, plenty fast to hang with most mid-sizes rockets and riders, but still a Harley, and still comfy enough for the long hauls.
