Diamondback Trailer
My choice is a landscape type trailer with a tall tailgate for a ramp. Add a taller 2 foot headboard to stop the rocks, and line the sides and front with whatever so it will hold a load of bark or whatever, or a load going to the dump. Add a couple of wheel chocks and some tie downs and you're good. For 2 bikes a 6x10 foot is ideal.
Here's what I started with - $1,000 + mods. Needs plywood floors and sides and built up headboard. Needs chocks - Harbor Freight - and tiedowns. Materials will be about $200. 2,500 pounds gross, about 2,000 pound carry.
Edit: I'm using the type of plywood that sign painters use - the type with the smooth paper coating that takes paint really well and looks nice painted. It's very durable too. I'm going to weld parts to make the headboard taller.
