Iâm not much of a wrench but I would agree with grumpy irish again and take a look at the points before getting too deep into the carb.

Just a few questions to maybe get a little better idea of what could be going on.
What do you have for a carburetor? Are you using the glass tube filter? Do you feel it cut out when you hit ž throttle with a gentle twist or just when you really poor on the power with a quick twist?

No. '85 was the last year for the IronHead Sportster. I know, I bought one new back then. In '86 the started with the Evo motors.
Back to the original question\\; I had a similar problem not too long ago. I drained the tanks, pulled the petcock and cleaned the filter screen. All was good after that.
