So I admit that I'm not currently a Harley owner but I plan to get one asap. \\; I'm a 51 yo new rider. \\; I'm taking the new rider course next week at my lcal dealer (Madison,WI). \\; I picked up a used Yamaha V-star 650 to learn on. \\; Been riding a few weeks and feel pretty comfortable on it so far.
I'm interested in getting a tourer for my second bike. \\; The wife is interested in riding along too so I want something comfortable for her. \\; How soon can I move up? \\; What model would be best for a second bike and comfortable for 2 up? \\; I'm torn between the Road King, Road Glide, and Electra glide.
I also bought a Yammy 650 for the wife to learn on...I rode it once, maybe twice and all I can say is I love my RK Custom..The RK is easier to ride and has better balance than the Yammy.
By the way, the wife has moved up to a Deluxe and says it is also easier to ride than the Yammy. If you can ride the 650 you can ride any HD you may want...So get your license and move on up..
I'm a big fan of the Road Glide. \\; It has a different look than the other baggers, and the frame mounted fairing makes it more stable (IMHO). \\; However, all the ones you are looking at are great bikes. \\; Test drive all of them and pick the one that fits you best. \\; Good luck!
If you're into fairing bikes my vote would be for the Ultra Classic with the works. \\; Treat yourself, you deserve it. \\; Get 3000 miles under your belt and take the ERC on your yammy. \\; Then get your Ultra. \\;
Someone told me, "If you survive the first 6 months of riding, you got a pretty good chance of being a safe rider". \\; I think it may be true. Get some miles on your machine before you do much 2up riding. \\; When you feel comfortable, test ride some bikes to see what you really want. \\; Take your time and find the prefect ride. \\; These things cost a bunch of $$$ Duh. \\; Ride safe and have fun.
FD
Is an Ultra too much for now? \\; Would softail be a better second bike? \\; Would a Road glide or Road king be easier to handle then an Ultra? \\; My thought is to put an order in on a HD for spring '09 delivery and ride the hell out of the V star until then - also try 2 up with the Yamaha first and possibly take the advanced rider course before riding the HD.
