Default Shipping bike cross country

I have found 3 different types of shippers:
&nbsp\\;
1.&nbsp\\; On a pallet covered - common carrier
&nbsp\\;
2.&nbsp\\; In a specially built crate - common carrier
&nbsp\\;
3.&nbsp\\; Specialty truck that moves cars &amp\\; bikes - stays in one truck, tied down to floor of truck.
&nbsp\\;
Any experiences as to which is the best approach?
&nbsp\\;
HD seems to have changed their program a bit.&nbsp\\; IT is #1 above.&nbsp\\; They pick up from your home and deliver to your home (I think they used to ship dealer to dealer).
&nbsp\\;
Thanks.... Warren

This isn't answering your question, but when I looked into shipping my bike for doing a trip down the pacific coast hiway (I live in VA), it was way too expensive.
So I ended up just renting from Eagle Riders in San Jose, flew out there and rode their 08 Fatboy.

If it were me, I'd go with someone who specializes in motorcycle transport.
May cost more but usually, they have added item specific insurance if the unimaginable were to happen.

we used a shipper on a chopper recently... lots of problems treated the other bikes like crap in the trailer... ran straps across paint!
