Seems new models year did come out around August/September , I had production figures for each model and year until the house burned down last year .. Harley did do some weird stuff in the day ..

I sure would like to know how your pap picked that FLH up for under $4k , my new 77 FLH set me back $6200 ..

Sounds like you got screwed! The msrp on the Anniversary edition in '78 was about $4,850, and the FLH 80 incher was about $4,900.

And, there were over 36K Electra Glides built from 65-69...a bit more than your numbers. I would be surprised if even a third of that total is still on the road.

Not sure at what point MoCo stopped using date codes. In the early days they even date coded the rims!

It was not until the mid 70s that MoCo switched to using the Julian calendar (Jan 1 = 1; December 31 = 365) on lower case numbers. If you knew how to read the info you could actually determine the day and month of your build.

And in accordance with popular vernacular, we are not old, we are just a bit used up
Hey Pan, you are right on the production, I was not year specific. What I meant was annually. The FLH production for the year of '69 was like 5500, that was not a combined total for all of the sixties. I worded it wrong. Also when you are talking about the specific day built and calculation, you are referring to the production number. I knew that and that is cool the way that worked out. That is how this question came about. If you have a 77 ElectraGlide and the number is 360, it was built December 26th. Which totally throws off the mid year model theory. Prior to mid 70 still remains a mystery. I know it's an odd question. Thanks for the response though!

I know on the left lower crankcase of My old 77 FXE there was a set of numbers commonly called Capitol Drive Numbers which I believe was a julian date followed by a sequence number (not real sure about this)

And to add a bit more...it is possible to have a 50 pan vin number w/ belly numbers that show it as a 49. MoCo did not waste cases and made sure to use the left over parts when and where they could. Kinda screws trying to figure production numbers and sequential series

Only thing I remember is there were transision years for Pan to shovel (pan bottom shovel top end) and shovel to Evo(shovel bottom and Evo top end) each running a couple years. I figure they were either using up stock or biding time until engineers could catch up.
