Falling Dogs
My buddy, Den, and I just got back home, Portland Oregon, on Tuesday from a 5 day trip through Oregon and northern California. We went to Bend via Hwy26, Fort Rock, Crater Lake, Grants Pass, Jacksonville, Red Woods, Crescent City Calif., Newport and then home. We rode in 90 degree temps, dense fog and rain. We had a great trip. However the first day was a little crazy.
We rode up to Mt. Hood's Timber Line Lodge and had lunch and got back on Hwy 26. We were still in the mountains and stuck behind an RV. One by one we all passed the RV on a passing lane. Den and I were leading a long line of cars with me out front. In my mirrors I could see this white pick-up truck darting in and out of traffic passing cars one by one and sure enough before long he's behind Den riding his ****. We go around a curve and there's a straight shot with no on-coming cars and I know this guy is going to pass us. He pops out and starts to pass Den, so I slow down to about 60mph to let him pass. As the truck is about parallel to me, I look in my right mirror to make sure Den is ok and I see this blob spinning circles behind Den on the road and into the ditch. I'm thinking it's not a deer, since I would have seen the truck hit the deer and it's too dark to be a deer. It's not a bear, because the blob was big, but not big enough to be a bear. By now the truck has passed me and is back in my lane and he turns on his right signal and hits his brakes. Mine you, there is no shoulder to pull over but the ditch, so he straddles the road and the ditch kicking up dust everywhere and I realize this idiot must have had a dog in the back of his truck along with his ATV and dirt bike. I at first think that maybe I should pull over, but there's no where for a bike to pull over and I'm not going in that ditch. I had to ride for maybe 5 miles before I could find a place to pull over and when I did, Den was still shaking. He said a large dog was hanging out the window and when the truck was parallel to me probably doing 70 mph, the dog slipped out the window and hit the road and started spinning across the road. Den had to quickly swerve to the left real hard to miss the dog. Den said, he hoped the dog was ok, I said I hope he's dead, because if not, the dog has got to be in lots of pain and if the dog wasn't dead, the owner probably had to drive to 30 miles to find a vet.
So in the future, I will be looking out for falling dogs and well as deer and bears.
