Graduated from MMI, AZ in '97 (Suzuki, Honda - put down the pitchforks) and quickly realized that I would starve to death because my diagnostic skills weren't up to par...but no regrets. I'm no expert but I learned a lot, great rides, great people...worked parts at Edwards Cycles for a while, and as a lot lizard at Cave Creek Exxon(back when they still had service). But that is where I first got exposed to welding and when I got a chance I went into welding and spent 10 years doing that. So it all worked out in a weird way.
For what it's worth, I own a custom shop and I'm on a review board for the MMI in Orlando. My son also went through the program. First off you get what you put into the training. If your real green it will give you a good base to start from. In my opinion the school does not give you enough of the real world when it come to fuel injection and electronics. The other issue is there are just not enough jobs out there and the pay is poor. It has to be a passion of your to be successful. Most all HD shops, have a very poor opinion of the students coming in. If you can get an apprentice program at a HD shop or good independent, you would do a lot better. Hell your not getting paid to go to school, so make the same offer at a dealer, come on half days for a year and work under a tech. You must have the basics to do well. Understanding basic engines etc. That's my two cents worth. Feel free to contact me and we can chat further.
BigDoghd what did your son think of the school from a non-technical perspective? Is the problems being experinced now something new or has the school always been this way?

I agree 100%.As an indy shop owner, and former AMI. grad.
Don't waste your time or money on MMI. It's more of a scam then it is helpful. I went there for the first couple of months you like it cause it's new and your doing something you think is gonna get you somewhere.. Then reality sets in and you find out all the things they promised when you sign on is WRONG. they tell you things like your gonna get $1200 toward snap-on tools free, and that their job placement rating is 92%, and that it's the greatest learning experience.. They blow smoke. you only get like $600 toward snap-on tools, Their job placement rating is more like 2%, and your learning experience sucks once you get out of your theory class. The student to teacher ratio is horrible, there's no 1 on 1 time and if you do get it your lucky, 80% of the class is cheating off someone else, All of the harley classes online that you have to complete everyone in the class has the actual answers to and everyone shares them so that's all cheated.. half of the teachers don't pay attention cause they're so into what's going on in their life outside of school, about 5 out of 30 kids can actually see the demonstrations, and then when your doing something wrong cause you couldn't see.. 8 times out of 10 you get yelled at for it.. anyway.. don't waste your money.. if you have any knowledge already you should try to just try your luck at a dealership and work your way up like your gonna have to do anyway, you just won't have to pull 26,000 out your pocket.

All colleges blow smoke. My college touted 98% or some **** job placement. I was one of the lucky ones. I got a job. Most people I know didn't and were asking me even though I lived 2 or more hours away from them if I could keep an eye open. Welcome to the world.
