Default How to get burnt rubber off pipes????

So I just returned from a ride on my Heritage Springer, and look down and notice that there is a large "chunk" of the heel (composite) of my Harley boot missing! I realize immediately that it melted against the hot pipe. I check the bike, and sure enough, a mess of black goo on the pipe right next to the foot rest. So what's the best, and easiest, way to get this crap off? Suggestions, please.

Thanks

You know, this comes up all the time. I thought Easy Off Oven cleaner was the best. Just heat, spray and towel off. Don't use steel wool!

My wife used to work at NASA. She said they called hydrazine "2 breaths to death".
