Default engine setups?

Ok guys this may be a dumb question but I have been sitting here wondering why harley has 2 different engine setups on their bikes. What I mean is the softail has the ridged mounted counterbalanced engine while the dyna and touring bikes have the rubbermounted non-balanced engine. Why is this? From my experience the softail is much smoother at idle which really dosent matter to me but why the different setups?

Same question about two or three months ago had about 300 responses. Makes for good reading.

Darn if I know but I'm glad they do. Different strokes for different folks.

There isn't enough room in the Softail frame for rubber mounts, so they came up with the counterbalanced "B" motor for the Softails to reduce the vibration at idle/low rpms.

Cheers!

I think they should put the "B" engine in the rubber mounts. Think of it; no shake at idle, no vibration at 75 mph either! Duh....

Dyna and Touring bikes have the same motor. Sportster and V-Rod make motor numbers 3 & 4.

More accurately the softail rear swing arm is attached to the frame and a rubber mounted engine would cause some drive belt issues with alignment changes from engine movement differing from frame. Dyna's and Baggers the rear swing arm is attached to the tranny motor combo. So nothing to do with no room for the rubber mounts on the softails. But exactly correct about coming up with the balanced motor for the rigid mounted engine.
I will take my shake at idle Dyna WG over a balanced rubber mounted bike any day. The shake adds charactor.
