Drunken-driving deaths fell in 32 states in 2007, the government reported
Thursday, but alcohol-related fatalities increased among motorcycle riders in
half the states.
I would like to see the statistics on how many new riders there are in comparison, in those 32 states...How many are harley riders vs other types? How many were drunk drivers before? Very general statistic that relates to us all.
Overall traffic fatalities are down to 1961 levels due to the price of fuel. (people are driving less & slower)Most likely since more people are riding motorcycles due to the price of fuel the increase is due to that shift in vehicle useage. But as more and more DUI riders get killed you will see stricter enforcement and definitely more mandatory helmet law legislation. There is talk in Washington about a Federal helmet law right now. Some anti-DUI legislators want to enact laws that prevent DUI offenders from getting a MC endorsement or losing an existing endorsement if you have a DUI on your record within 10 years. I can't remember where I read that but I think the State was Florida. The premise was if they caught you riding while your endorsement was under suspension they could confiscate your bike and auction it off.
So, drinking and driving on your scoot effects us all as a group.
I wonder if a car pulls in front of a bike, and the rider has ANY measurable alcohol in his system, is Alcohol considered as a factor in the crash??
If it is a fatality they do a BAC test at the autopsy...so yes. FWIW, in Ohio if you are DUI and somebody who has not been drinking hits you...you are at fault.
