Default Help!

I'm in the process of getting a manual, but I need to know the torque specs for an exhaust bolt on an 83' Shovel. The bolt has backed out twice and I'm guessing that I'm not tightening it enough, even though it feels like I am. I am a little gun shy after having stripped a bolt years ago on a different bike.

Thanks,

Max

I do not have a manual here at work, but I can check for ya when I get home. Are you using any kind off lock washer or lock nut? My bike vibrates so much I lock washer or lock nut pretty much everything.

Slap a bit of paint or thread locker on it... it will bake up and won't rattle off. Lock washer is a good idea too. I think the torque is around 120 in lbs (not foot lbs)

I use stainless(poished) allen cap screws, a chrome lock washer, and blue (not red) Loctite. It's a rattlehead, OOPS shovelhead, for Heaven's sake.
High Temp copper silicone on the Fire ring gasket, too. I have also used it on the threads in the past with good success. Just let it stand for 24 hrs B4 running, tho.
I ONLY use silicone on external parts. I have opened up motors with silicone in oil pump, lifter drains, upper end screens. I use Permatex High Tack or Gasgacinch, for anything touching the internals.
If I have NOT worked on the particular motor B4, I also like to take a bottoming tap, and run it in there, B4 I do the above. Just in case there is a boogered thread in there.
B4 Loctite, we used Elmer's glue or fingernail polish. I really hated that, when someone would use my pink polish on a scoot, tho.

Some people already mentioned it, and I don't mean to insult your intelligence, but you are using Loctite, right?

Great advice! Thanks to you all. I am not currently using a lock washer, but that makes sense to me. I wonder if a hardware store would have something appropriate, or if it should be a washer with more high temp. applications than the norm...

Thanks again!

Are you sure it's 20 ft lbs? That's more than double the torque of 120 in lbs. I don't know the exact specs on that engine, that's why I'm asking?
