Clammy, I have ridden Hundreds of miles on HD's for that last thirty years and I always downshifted , that is they way I was taught, if course that was on a Panhead chopper with no front brake and a lousy Rear drum brake,,,,,,,

downshiifting (depending on the rpm) will drag and wear out your rear tire ,,,just like a burnout!

Huh ?????

Riding a bike without downshifting is like riding a bike without countersteering. It can't be done.

Brake pads are cheap. Engine work is expensive.

I use the engine to accelerate & cruise. I use the brakes to slow down & stop. The only exception being when doing a long downhill run - in that case, using the engine is mandatory, as the brakes wouldn't last.

Some people believe that it puts added wear and tear on the primary chain tensioner because the tensioner side of the chain is tightend up when using the engine as a brake...

Personally, I've never seen proof if that's true.

Where do you folks come up with some of these wild azzed ideas? A read some of these threads and scratch my head in amazement...not only at the opening question/statements, but also at some of the answers.
Oh well, for the most part, it's good cheap entertainment anyway.
Not picking on this particular thread, just saying...

The owners manual gives you the down shift speeds, if they didnt want you to change down they would not have included it in the manual, I think that answers the question,
