I go to 0 in the center, probably shouldn't, but I watch it close, and as soon as I get close I order another tire, and as soon as I get to 0 I change it out. But...... if I had a long trip to go on, I would change it early.

You are never wasting money when it comes to safety, some people are just willing to accept a little more risk than others.

It depends on when it gets to the questionable range (3/32 sounds about right).
Near the end of the season and if I don't have any long trips planned I might try and get more miles out of a tire then change it over winter.
If its near or at 3/32 over winter I'd get it changed before spring. Even if I could get another 1-2k out of it, I'd hate messing with it just when the weather gets nice.
Also it doesn't hurt to have good tread during the spring rains.

As long as it is your $ss and not mine! You could give a lot of reasons for not riding on a thin skin but there are some that wouldn't pay attention to it anyway! State here says 3/32 minimum for inspections, there must be a reason they would make that a minimum???

down to 5/32 now on the RKC and I will be cahnging tires down south in October!

+1 I've gone as far as having threads showing. Just didn't have a chance to change the tire as I use the bike daily as my commute vehicle. I've gone through three rear tires this year.

If I know I'm just gonna be tooling around town, I will take the tread all the way down, however, if I'm planning on taking an out of town trip, I will change tire with as much as 3/32.

Interesting thing about tread - it gives you LESS contact with the road. A slick offers the best grip on a dry, clean surface. Tread is for moving water and dealing with things like a patch of gravel in the road.
