Don't get too depressed.....everything is down right now. The stock market, real estate, employment, export trade, automobile values, you name it. The only thing going up is gold, energy, food.
Yes the values have dropped and the intro of the 96/6 did not help the value of the 88/5. However, the value of almost everything has dropped dramatically. Try selling an SUV, or a house, or motorhome. Unfortunately, it is going to get worse before it gets better. Fortunately for you, your Harley will probably hold it's value better than most big ticket items.
Well, the dealer still wants to sell a new bike and doesn't want to buy your bike for a lot of dollars. There's a profit motive there. If I were in your place I would consider reading the classified ads to see what everyone else in your area is asking for the same bike. That would give you a good idea of what your bike is worth in your area. Of course the asking price and the selling price are a little different. I'd conside abut ten percent to be a good indicator of the difference in the two prices. Good luck if you're thinking about swapping for a new bike. New bikes are always lots of fun.
Remember the Harley stealer has to make a profit selling your bike. You can find a guide as to it's value at KBB.com. Due to the slow economy bikes, boats,RVs, and SUVs have taken a hit in the market. Selling it privately will yield your best return. Good luck.
Just sold my 05 Heritage w/6K miles on it. Got 13K for it. Had it at the dealer on consignment, but no luck. Found a buyer for it myself, so dealer let me take it back and sell it to the private buyer, without giving me any hassle.
Did that and gave the dealer some bucks for letting me put it on his lot, and pushing it in and out of the dealership for two months. I wouldn't work for free(unless it was my choice to help someone) and I wasn't going to expect him to do the same.

Everything is down right now but the 2003 and up TC 88 and the first year TC96 will be of less value in the future (first year bikes need the bugs worked out). There were just too many produced and after 2002 they started using cheaper parts in the engines. They have reduced production and that may help the 2009 models in the future. People are getting older and we have not seen great numbers of young folks switching over.
