Hello Men, I will be taking delivery of a 2009 Electra Glide Classic in mid November. My question is oil related. There may be more hype about the best oil to use than is necessary to actually worry about to much. Besides the break-in oil, which oil do you think I should be using in my engine etc. I do believe the synthetic oil is better than conventional oil for motorcycles.
Does it really matter too much about the brand such as Harley's syn. opposed to other brands. Also, can we keep this discussion between theses 3 major brands Harley synthetics, Mobile 1 synthetics and Amsoil synthetics. I truly don't which would be better in the long run.
If I was wanting to purchase a used bike, that might be one question I might ask. What brand and type of oil have you been using? Or, does it really make that much of a difference. I live in an area where we may have hot weather that is 90 degree or better for about 3 months. I probably want be doing a lot of riding in the very hot months.
Thank you much for your knowledge in this very important issue on oil.

As 69 Z said (BTW 69 was the last good lookin camaro IMO! Always wanted a 69 RS/SS ragtop) it is a personal choice. Harley oil is made by Citgo if I remember right and have had two HD dealers tell me the Syn 3 isn't the greatest oil in the world and (unofficially of course) I would be better off with a name brand syn Redline and Mobil 1 were mentioned, neither of which they carried. I have run Mobil 1 in my other scooters for years with no prob. Have redline in at the moment
Sorry for being redundant. New kid on the block. Although I spoke with a Harley Davidson representative, she said it would not void my warranty at all if I go with another brand as long as it meets specifications and as long as you don't accidently receive a bad batch. If you go with Harley's brand, no question asked. Sound good to me.
Sorry to bother, Have a great day.

Harley doesn't have an oil refinery. Pick any one of the 3. It's just oil. There are so many people that spend way to much energy worrying about oil and gasoline grade.
I like it when people think that 93 octane is "SUPER" or "HI TEST" and their vehicle will run better if they spend the extra money and put this in their tank. Makes me laugh

No oil is "slick" enough to get away with the "hello men" start.....

Amsoil 50w, in both my scoots, and 10-40 in Momma's, here. That's cuz I git it for FREE for workin' on 'his' scoot.
BelRay 85-140 in the gear boxes, but I was just informed on here, yesterday, Amsoil has 85-110, so I am gonna try that in the boxes for kicking in 'cool' weather.

It is all pretty good, just stay with synthetic, so long as it is rated for motorcycle use.
I found these on bikenomads.com
The only body which is rates oils for use in 4stroke wet clutch bikes is JASO - Japanese Automotives Standards Organisation . There are two ratings from JASO - MA and MB . MA for hi friction engines and MB for low friction engines . MB is never recommened for any indian bike . As explained previously its for low friction application - not for our kind of bikes.
Always use JASO MA grade oil . It doesnt matter what the API rating is , if its JASO MA - you are guaranteed that the clutch won't slip and as long as the oil is not API SL and above you are guaranteed that the oil is not harming the engine. All the relevant links are given below.
