I am planning on riding up to Va's Eastern Shore from MS for work, but am wondering on the gas shortages along the way. I will be taking 85 up to VA and stopping in Hickory, NC overnight to visit friends. I don't want to run out of gas with the bike so may take the cage instead. Will I run into a problem?
You should be able to find 93 octane(and other grades too) here in Hickory, although you may have to go several places before you do. There's an Exxon on HWY 16 North(exit #132 on I-40) four miles north of I-40 that has had gas almost the entire time. From what I've seen that Exxon usually has all grades, while others are hit & miss. There has been gas available, you just may have to look for it. The long lines we were experiencing at stations have pretty much gone away too. If you want you can PM me and I'll send you my contact info. I'd be glad to look online and research availability for you when you're in this area if it will help you out.
You won't have any problem once you get east of Winston-Salem - they aren't in the mess we are. Around here it is pretty hit or miss. I don't see many cars on the side of the road with no gas, so if you look a bit you can usually find it.

Energy secretary explains gas shortage RALEIGH, N.C. -- North Carolinians may see additional relief at the pump starting next week: The governor says a pipeline that provides the state with its main fuel supply will start working at full capacity.
Gov. Mike Easley said Thursday that the pipeline, which has been running at full capacity in the Gulf since Tuesday, is expected to bring the additional fuel to the state next week.
Easley also said he will continue to bring in 50 to 100 tankers a day to Charlotte and western North Carolina, but he did not indicate how long that would take place.
A gasoline shortage has been affecting several parts of the state since Hurricane Ike hit the Texas Gulf Coast.
AAA says that currently one out of every three gas stations in Charlotte has gas. That’s up from one out of five in recent days.
The average price for regular unleaded is $3.99, still higher than the state average of $3.87 and the national average of $3.60.
The latest predictions are that the gas shortage in the area may not be completely alleviated for another week or so.
