...ridng with a windshield? I just put one on my sportster, and it is the right height, as I can see over it. However, it is a little distracting, depending on where I have to look and the transition from looking over/around the windshield, to having to look through it. If I sit very upright, I clear the top of the shield by a good couple inches. But if I'm in my "normal/natural" riding position, I'm just peering over it.
Is this just something one gets used to over time? any suggestions, or anything, or do I just need more miles with it?
It is more of a distraction while riding at night... during the day I have not noticed it as much. In the whole scheme of things, it's not a big problem, but I am aware of it.
Drew, what was the reason for attaching the windshield? Is it successful in achieving the wanted goal? I think anything new will feel strange for a while and then just become part of the bike. Put some miles on the combo you have created and then decide.
It took me a while to get used the fairing on my UC, but mostly because of the way the wind knocks you. Without a windshield there is a more steady force against you, with it the wind seems to tumble around me more. I have the 4" shield on mine so it is really low. It sounds to me though like you are having to modify your sight a bunch which doesn't seem right to me. I'd either go lower or higher to avoid having to make that adjustment myself.
I prefer riding without the windshield, but I got it for when doing longer trips with a lot of highway travel. Also, hoping to extend the riding season a bit here in Chicago, by keeping the cold off of me. In those capacities, it works well.
I probably just need more time with it. I don't think it's too tall. I am 6'1", so I would think if it's too tall for me, it would be too tall for many. Again, I do see over the shield when in my normal riding position.

I could never get used to one..I can jump on Mama's RoadKing and ride all day, all week, all month..And not be comfortable.. I like the feeling of not bein so wind beat, Of not havin ta use earplugs on the highway, Not havin bug guts in my teeth.. I just in 35+ yrs could not get around the lookin over/under etc thing.. Put some miles on.. then decide..
I will add that iffin the Lord should ever bless me with the $$ to pick up a used Ultra in my Old age.. I'll put up with it..

Sounds like its just about the right height for you. You are suppose to look just over the top of the shield not thru it. The reason for the shield is to move the air that would be hitting you in the face over the top of your helmet. You will appreciate it the next time you get caught in the rain when you can duck down slightly and no rain hits you in the face. I equate learning to ride with a windshield to learning to wear bi focal glasses, before long you won't even notice it, but you will like the benefits.
It may take a few miles to get used to it. IMO it sounds like it is 1-2 inches too high.
You should be looking over it in your normal position.
If your used to riding without a shield you could go several inches shorter/narrower,
it would still cut down on the wind.
