Be honest out there! Does anyone ride in the cold with a Carrhart style one piece work suit, you know the tan, heavy canvas with quilting inside? I looked at them in Academy today (another brand they carry is Brazos) and they were pretty warm and comfortable. O.K. I admit it. I bought one. Its comfortable and doesn't restrict seating comfort or arm and leg movement. Haven't ridden in the cold yet, and they are obviously not for the rain, but I'm looking forward to trying it. For $59.00 it sure beats an Aerostich Roadcrafter at $800.00. I ain't dressing for a fashion show anyway!
Any snowmobile style one piece suit works well. The biggest drawback is that they are very bulky, so when the day warms up, you take it off and have to deal with where are you going to pack it.
WalMart sells some really nice cold weather gear for less than $60. Much less in the spring on discount.
The only problem I have with Carhart-type coveralls is they don't block wind out as well as a nylon-type suit. But, they don't melt on your pipes either. If it's very cold, they just don't keep me warm enough. My $.02
I've tried riding in a Carhartt. Didn't work - wind blew through it and froze me gonadus apparatus. Works good when I'm 200 - 500 feet in the air on a smoke stack, but not on a bike.
I ride in the carhart bibs when it gets cold. If I think the wind is cutting too much, I might add my rain gear over the carharts and then it's toast city. The rain gear keeps the wind away and the suit keeps the heat in. Works for me.
I've been wearing one to ride quads in the winter for years... without any issue.. Haven't tried it yet on the bike.. This thread may have extended my riding season as it's already 30s here in Cleveland.
