If your pops isn't up for the bike ride, take him out there another way. Rent a convertable and drive the rides. To be able to look up while you're going through the Spearfish Canyon is amazing. You can't get the true experience in vehicle with a roof. Same with the Wildlife Loop in Custer Park, the Needles Highway and Iron Mountain Road. Take him to the Aladdin Store on the way to Devil's Tower - it's like stepping back 100 years in time.
Sturgis is OK for a day, I like to look at the bikes after that I'm bored with it.
It is truly a beautiful part of the country and a trip you and your dad will never forget. I'm watching an outdoors show as I'm writing this and they are in the Black Hills driving buffalo in the park. It makes me wish I was there.
That's a great idea. I didn't even think of a convertable, that would be the way to go if he isn't up for the ride. Thanks man.
The ride to and from, the ridin around the area, gettin out of town.Lots to see but I couldnt wait to get out on the road and ride, lots of great roads.Id spend a day doing the town then get out and enjoy the area.If your dad can do the ride thats the best part
We were going to go for the first time this past summer, but my husband changed jobs and he didn't have the vacation time to take off then. I was so disappointed. I had put many hours of research in and we already had a campground to stay at. If you really want to do some good research on where to stay and what to do, I suggest ordering this DVD. It has everything, all the bars, all the campgrounds, all the motels, all the scenic rides and landmarks and on and on all around the area and nearby towns. I got the 2008 version last year and it's great. Good luck! Have fun!http://www.sturgis.com/mall/2009guide.html
Take some time to explore, Spearfish canyon, Rushmore, Devils tower, Bad lands, Custer battlefield, Crazy horse, Cody, Deadwood, Teatons, Used to be great on Pantyless wendsday in Heulitt, But I think they stopped or slowed that down. Too much to see in a week. If you see me say Hi. I'll be riding a Harley and wearing a leather jacket .

Oh yeah, I think I have seen you on some of the videos.

Hey that is a great suggestion, looks very comprehensive. Thanks for the link Rhonda.
I was reading about the buffalo chip campground, they already have a couple bands booked. do you think they'll get more bands as it gets closer to the date? And if so, maybe booking now would be cheaper? Will the price go up as the date gets closer?

cool! What about safety? I've read about problems with M/C's fighting. Is that media hype?
Also what about camping? I was hoping to just sort of show up. I saw a picture of a huge camping area, could have been the buffalo chip campground, what would it be like to stay there? Can you leave your camping stuff during the day when you're out for a ride?
The M/Cs fighting is mostly media hype. I'm not saying it dont happen, but really there is so much to do and see and go, the chances of you getting caught in the middle of something like that is very small. Most of the trouble is from punks that have to much to drink and have to prove themselves to be toughguys. If you want to avoid fighting and petty chit like that, just stay away from all the big party bars. There's so much more to do it ain't hard to avoid trouble like that.
As for just showing up, it's a 50/50 chance you'll find something. We saw places everywhere advertising space to pitch your tent in someone's backyard-for a price. To get the best price and not have to worry about it, I would recommend booking a place as soon as you know for sure your going. I don't know about the huge campgrounds like the Chip or Glencoe. We stay at a tiny campground just past the Chip on the other side of the road, its called the Bear Butte Creek Campground. Very nice place-it's quiet at night, they have pretty good food, usually a live band every night with a little private bar that seems decent, they even have a tattoo artist that sets up shop there all week. We have no worries leaving our stuff behind during the day. Of course we take our RV, but we also leave the trailer unlocked and one year we had friends who pitched tents right next to the RV and there was no trouble.
Sturgis is not what the old timers remember it being-no sleeping it off in City Park anymore, and the nudity on main st is being kept in check-but it is still an awesome place to go. Sturgis is certainly unique in my experience.

They always have a chitload concerts and bands. They get so many they don't even bother advertising half of them until that week.
