Maybe it's just me, but don't people have friends anymore? A couple of guys I ride with live in apt bldgs. and just park the bikes at a friend's garage...I've let guys use my garage, I thought that's what friends do?
What do you do, walk a few miles to your bike and then go to ride to work? Park it and walk home?
I mean, if your neighbour is your bro, no problem. But if you live in an apt, and your bro lives two (2) miles away... And what about going on a ride when you want to?
Man have you guys missed this one. I bring it in the apartment. The same holds true for the motel. Dang bike goes right through the doorway no problem. Now, if you live upstairs, that's a problem and I would investing in a nice cover with some locking loops and a cable lock.
Upstairs wouldn't be a problem if your building has an elevator. Of course it would have to be big enough.

It's just not feasible for most folks.
I know a bunch of guys who use friend's garages...they figure the bike is a lot safer than sitting on the street/parking lot or open parking garage...it's not about the little bit of inconvenience, it's about protecting your investment...there are punks out there who'll steal or trash or your unprotected bike just for ***** and giggles...and why would they walk to get their bike?...drive to their bike, and go on a ride whenever they want to...might take a little effort, but none of them have had a bike vandalized or stolen...I've got keys to a few of my friend's garages and they've got one to mine, come and get your bike when you want to...we're friends...

Why are you renting an apartment? You live in Florida. There has to be hundreds of houses and condos with garages in foreclosure that you could rent from the bank or foreclosed owner. I have a friend who lost his job and then the bank forclosed on him and seized his house. He offered to rent the house until they could sell it. They agreed. Then the stock market crashed. Then the bank called him and asked if he wanted to re-negotiate a new mortgage and get his house back.
My point, there is a garage out there waiting for your bike.

I like this idea too. But you might be able to get a cheap, beater panel van for not much more money. Then you'd have an additional form of transport, as well as having a "garage" for the bike.
Aside from that, there's plenty of other great advice on this thread. When I lived in apartments, I always made sure it was locked up to a post, or something secure. And make sure your insurance is up to date!
