Low Profile Windshield Question
Long story short. A few weeks ago went to my local dealer for a windshield for my Dyna Super Glide, and they were out of the 58348-06 low profile that I really wanted. Money burns a hole in my pocket for some reason when I'm in the Harley Shop, so I sprung for the taller Super Sport, not realizing that you can't mount a bag without those metal frames, plus I can't see over the damn thing in the rain. Any of y'all have the low profile, and does it cut the wind pretty well? My Super Sport Shield went on e-bay tonight, so I hope I can recoup some of the $$ to get the low profile. Your opinions will be very helpful, so sorry about the "short" version! My other windshield is in the HD Forums classified if anyone is interested in purchase or trade. Thanks everyone!
I went to a "WindVest" and Love it. It's about the size of a Laptop Computer and works as well as the H-D Full size without the buffeting. I got mine on Ebay for about 1/4th of what they go for new.
I finally put the low profile shield on my SB today...rode about 65 miles in constant 20-25 mph winds at 60-70 mph on the highway. It was buffetting pretty bad at times, but I started to get used to it after 30 mins. I think a few adjusments will help take away some of the buffetting.
It offers a decent amount of protection and I think it's only 14.3" high from the headlight, so you should easily be able to see over it. I'm happy with it...

I've tried small, short & just under my eye size on both softails & buffeting sucked on all of them. I put wind deflectors on the Std. with an eye level shield & it helped a lot & was very usable until I cut off about 1.5" & some of the buffeting came back. The original shield that came with the 09 Heritage was just below my nose & buffeting sucked again so I replaced it with the tall shield which is completely over my eyes. No buffeting, great protection & I'm happy. It took a little time to get used to looking through it but it is worth it.
BTW, I usually just use a shield in cold weather. Most of the time they are off.

I wonder if the buffetting problem is because most guys are attaching windshields to their handlebars. I've never ridden my Road Glide without a windshield, but I don't notice any buffetting- maybe I'm used to it- but my windshield is effectively connected to the frame and not the handlebars.
Go with the Windvest. Works great without buffeting. You can also get a summer profile screen from Cee Baileys that is designed to take the wind off your chest while letting air on your helmet.
