Default Communicating while riding

My dad, brother and I would like to take a long ride from AZ to CA, but would like to be able to talk to one another somehow if need be. Is there some sort of walkie talkie that has a chord that can go into the helmet? All three of us wear full face helmets also. I know there must be something out there that would let us do this. Can anyone recommend something to me for this?

Lots of $50 ones out there. Look into Rad Shack or even JC Whitney.

Most are wireless and fit inside your bucket, or can be worn with a head piece.

Just dont get them wet. I shorted a set out in a down pour.

Get some Midland FRS radios. You can use the VOX feature that will let you transmit any time you speak. You can use an ear bud to listen, and put the mike part of the cable against the front of the chin bar on your full face helmet.

If you don't like that, then you can go to the Ham set up. It will require you to pass the tech test. Go to "QRZ" website and you can practice for the test. It's only thirty questions. You can also find out where, in your area, the next test is being held. I have a General license and am living proof that you can get a ham license without actually knowing anything about radios. The morse code requirement for a ham license has been dropped. A ham radio set up will allow you to use a repeater set up so that you don't blank each other out. It's like speaking on a cell phone which transmits on one frequency and receives on another frequency. The ham radio set up also allows you to use a freqency that the CB'ers and FRS'ers can not hear. Other hams will hear you but they are usually polite and are more helpful. They can be a good resource for the local area, particullarly if you need help. Who knows, you might find a new hobby. Some of that stuff is pretty neat. There are a few ham operators who do television, talk to the international space station and all kinds of other stuff you probably have not considered.

As for me, I have talked to guys in New England from the Oregon Coast. I did it with a small radio that sets on the dashboard of my truck. It's no bigger than a CB radio. Most of the time I just listen to the police and 911 dispatchers. Do not ever, ever, ever transmit on offical police and 911 frequencies. In most cases you will go to jail, and losing your radio us just a minor part of the deal. Also, it's illegal to listen to those frequencies in some states and communities. Your local Radio Shack will give you a list of the freqencies for your store bought scanner, if it's ok for you to listen to those frequencies.

Good luck with it.

I forgot to tell you. Stop by the Honda dealer. Those Goldwing guys talk to each other all the time so they have some sort of set up for bike to bike communcations. Probably the Harley shops has something you can use too. I have a feeling that it is CB based radios though.

Those sound like excellent solutions, I'm going to check into them tomorrow. We're pretty excited about taking a road trip with the bikes.

Scala Q2 Multiset. HIGHLY recommended! Bluetooth. Up to 3 people can communicate w/ each other, works with most Bluetooth phones, Bluetooth GPS (like the Garmin Zumo) can also be linked. Kinda pricey, but worth it. Great reception. Great range...up to 1600 ft.

If you have a larger group, they can be daisy chained. The Q2 comes with 2 headsets. You'd need to buy the 3rd and sync it up. I just bought us 2 extra mounts/microphones for our other helmets.

Both of us wear Arai full face helmets, but they work with pretty much all helmets. Rode with a guy that had it and we synced up and were able to talk. He wore a HJC modular I think. After reading about it on this forum, I researched it some more and was so sold, I didn't even consider another one. Google it to look for the best deal, but as always, be careful of the online seller and make sure they're reputable.

Safe travels!

I am getting ready to buy four of these radios so my wife and I can talk when we have the kids with us on our bikes. Wanted to know if anyone had an opinion on the "Midland GXT1000VP4 50-Channel 36-Mile Waterproof 2-Way GMRS Radio"

Amazon has them for about $64 a pair right now. the boys have full face helmets and the wife and I both have modular. These look ideal.

We went for a ride yesterday with the local HOG chapter (first time) and the road captains had someting liket his. I didn't really think seriously about getting them until we were on the way home though and thus didn't get a chance to ask what they were using.

+1 on the Scala Rider Bluetooth units. My wife and I use them, and they are awesome. You can talk bike to bike, intercom, if you need/want to connect your phone, ipod, GPS, you can do it either with Bluetooth or 3.5mm jack. No buttons to push once they're turned on, waterproof, light
etc. etc. etc.
REALLY good gear!
