Default Dumb question about re attaching throttle cables

Just put road slammers on softail and can't get throttle cable on. I am right there but having hard time getting it to slip over grips contour. Do i need to go and disconnect it from where it is connected down below, put on grip and then re connect. Been at changing these bars out for a while, maybe I'm just burned out and re evaluate in morning ( bouncing off walls). Thanks for any little tricks, keep dropping that dang copper piece that slips on cable. Thanks for answering, I'm sure, stupid question. How I feel right now , to many Monsters.

Get a bucket or easter basket and hang it from the handlebars to catch the brass ferrels when you drop them. Cause they have a bad habit of disapearing on you otherwise.
As for putting them into the grip have you completely backed off on the adjusters?
If you haven't it will make things easier, if you have make sure your putting them on the right way. You 'can' put them on backwards, but it ain't easy.
Also if I remember right you want to put on the throttle side first. Then you can twist the grip (like you taking off or throttle up) to get the idle cable in easier.
If you have a friend handy you can make it a little easier if he holds the throttle 'on' while you get the idle cable in place.

PS there is no such thing as a dumb question, its my firm belief that the only truely dumb question is the one you DON'T ask.
Cause the odds are that the answer to that one will save you a bunch of time, trouble, and maybe money.

... and a new P/U truck for $8400. Things didn't get more expensive, the dollar just isn't worth as much. I'm now making about 4x more per year than I was in the 80's, and can just about buy the same.

I just did heated grips and was wrestling with it. I ended up just holding the the little brass piece in the hole, then used a hooked dental pick tool to pull the cable up then dropped it into the channel. Throttle side first. You could use a piece of coat hanger just as easily.

The bars are HD's and are called 'Bombay Bars' with integral tach housing. I needed something lower that also came back more. That they had a tach housing is a bonus as I didn't like the idea of getting a $400 combo speedo/tach and having to look down to see what the engine was doing. These allow me to see the tach in my peripheral vision while I keep an eye on the idiot talking on his/her cell phone instead of where the hell their going.
The pipes are V&H Big Radius and your right they are expensive, but keep an eye on evil-bay. You can sometimes find them and others for a more reasonable price.
I remember when drag pipes were free. A lot of guys just used the stock pipes with the mufflers pilled off. It they wanted a different look they would take a hacksaw to them cutting the ends at an angle.

I would love to take credit for it, but to be honest I learned that trick from someone else around here and I have to say its saved me a lot of unnecessary looking around for the silly things when I get fumble fingered.

Just so happens I was working on my handlebars these past Tuesday when the brass furle made a break for it...down he when laughing and flipping me the bird. I reckoned that he rolled E&E over to the wood that I have piled up in my garage (COC). I start looking and looking and looking some more before taking a lunch break. When I was done with lunch I decided to bring some wood up. I have heavy piece of oak in my right hand and my left trigger finger next to another piece of oak when the brass furle kicks the piece in my right hand causing it slip and smash the tip of my left trigger finger between the piece I was holding and the piece that was laying. Thankfully my 4 year-old daughter did not her daddy 'yell' at the wood. But becuase I was bushwacked I found the furle...after waterboarding him a bit I wrastled him back into his detainee room. Yes, between the furle and other electrical issues with the Beast, I almost commenced to re-enacting a scene from the Shinning in my garage...soon as the weather breaks, I'm back on the road!
