Any one that values their image and look more than getting a job just isn't desperate enough yet. Beard, piercings, long hair--they all send a message that the person is not so very interested in fitting in. That's great and congratulations to you. But all other things equal, most will hire the conforming person.
I don't know, but it seems in today's job market, with so many out of work and looking for employment, the employer can be pretty 'picky' in deciding who to hire. A persons appearance and first impression is probably more important now than it might have been before.
Saw a few things on CNN where they said hundreds of people were standing in line, just for a chance to apply for a handful of jobs that were available.
I've always had long hair, and wear a beard during the colder winter months, but I've never had a job dealing with the public where I had to worry about my appearance.
My father told me when I was young. "Your never going to get anywhere because you don't like to conform, and your mouth is going to get you into a lot of trouble....don't ever change!" I had a great father.
I was smart too - never did homework -zipped through grades - was in college at 16 - I did OK, never been out of work, taken care of myself all my life. I don't like society telling me what to do, probably why I rode a motorcycle in the 70's when most women didn't!
Your son is very smart - he will work it out his way!!
